BasketD1.437 a-b

Basket base (a) and lid (b) composed of coiled cedar root with parallel slat base construction, four loops on rim for attaching handles and a flange on the lid. The basket is partially beaded with two slat rows of beading on the body of the basket. The top band is red/yellow-white/red staggered, and the bottom band is three rows of staggered red cherry bark. There are also four strips of cherry bark on the lid with more cheery bark on the rim of the lid and basket.

Rectangular flared coiled basket (bifurcated stitches). Parallel splint base construction. Upper half of basket is fully imbricated in grass with geometric mirrow image 'c' shapes, double outlined in dark cherry bark. Lower portion of basket is beaded in vertical rows of parallel bands alternating in grass and dark cherry bark ("cluster of flies" pattern). Skin loops on one side in each corner, two remaining knots on opposite side and short side.

Rectangular flared coiled work (bifurcated stitches). Parallel splint base construction. Upper half fully beaded on three sides in repeated horizontal bands alternating between cat-tail grass (?) and dark cherry bark. Fourth side has three vertical bands of "cluster of flies" (checker board stripes), two in cat-tail grass (?) and red cherry bark, and the middle row in dark cherry bark and cat-tail grass (?). Lower half has sections of vertical lines, with plain coils between, of cat-tail grass (?) and red cherry bark in same alternating checkerboard pattern. Rim is imbricated in cat-tail grass (?) with alternating intervals of red, and black cherry bark stitches. String ties on all sides.

Footed rectangular basket. Simple coiled work (bifurcated stitches); parallel slat base construction; foot on one slat; partial imbrication and beading. Sides: "snake track" design (vertical zigzag) in bullrush with black on left and red on right, flanking two diamond shapes in black/bullrush/red. Ends have a single "snake track" motif. Foot is imbricated with three red stitches every sixth stitch; rim is beaded with red. Colour: tan.

Fully imbricated in cat-tail grass (?), with rows of wide vertical bands of "cluster of flies" (checkerboard) pattern on all sides, with two extra narrow rows on each long side, flanking center. Rim is beaded in black. May have had a looped border or another row of coils at one time.
