Basketry TrayA8449

Tan basketry tray with cedar slat foundation and cedar root coiled elements and a handle at either end. Decorated with beading in bullrush with red and black cherry bark. Simple interlocking coiled work (bifurcated stitches). Parallel slat construction. Braided loop work border and reinforcement at the sides. Design consists of alternating red and black chevrons on a light yellow background.

Storage BasketA8448

Rectangular basket with splint foundation and coiled elements of cedar root. Fully imbricated in grass with red and black cherry bark. Foot is beaded in red cherry bark in three coiled rows. Slat bottom. Has steel handles. Fully imbricated and beaded. Designs in black and red cherry bark that consist of zigzags that stretch to the full height of the basket in black/red/black. Also diamonds in red and black with geometric shapes in between.

Basketry MatA8472

Small, circular, cedar root mat of interlocking coiled work. Consists of eight plain coiled areas (starting with watch-spring construction) connected by two concentric bands of loop work. The centre design has a star-like appearance. There are interspersed black coils along the outer ring; black and red double coils on the middle ring and an all red central ring.

Lunch BasketA8447

Basket with cedar root slat foundation and coiled elements of cedar rootlet. Lid is attached with rawhide thongs. Simple interlocking coiled work with bifurcated stitches with a parallel slat base and lid. Base with graduated parallel reinforcement stitches, and lid with one continuous slat around circumference. Decorated with beading in red and black-dyed cherry bark. Base has flange and is decorated with partial beading. The partial beading consists of vertical groupings of diamond shapes, each consisting of four smaller diamond shapes. There are three groupings, which alternate red/black, on the lid and front and back sides of the basket (one on each edge side).

Part (a) Large urn shaped coiled basket (with bifurcated stitches) with lid. imbricated design of diagonally criss-crossing bands of red and dark cherry bark with cat-tail grass (?) between. In the space created between are four vertical crosses in dark and red cherry bark with cat-tail grass centers. Foot of two coiled rows. Part (b) lid has barely indented flange on lid. Imbrication has same band configuration forming three peaks. Knob at center of lid.

Coiled work basket (bifurcated stitches); base construction is elongated watch-spring along diagonal with filler each side. Sides of basket curve in at four sides. Top rim has slight lip. Foot is fully imbricated with cat-tail grass (?), with four red and four dark cherry bark beads. Imbricated design on body is one band of groups of three crosses in red or dark cherry bark with cat-tail grass (?) centers. Under lip is same pattern of imbrication as on foot. On top rim, fully imbricated with cat-tail grass (?) and black cherry bark.

Rectangular coiled work (with bifurcated stitches). Elongated watch spring construction. Imbricated designs of vertical rows of small rectangles with red and dark cherry bark. Repeated indents and coil protrusions on rim indicate there may have been a loop work border. Red beading along very bottom edge.

Part (a) coiled basket (with bifurcated stitiches) with pedastal base. Imbrication in crabapple bark, black cherry bark and cat-tail grass in repeating parallel zig-zag bands of crabapple bark, cat-tail grass (?), dyed cherry bark, cat-tail grass (?), crabapple bark. Watch-spring base and lid construction. One row of crabapple bark at the rim of basket and on rim of lid part (b). Overcast handles on basket and knob handle on lid. Lid has similar imbrication pattern.
