VestM5.8 b

Long cream vest with embroidery, fringe and beads. The vest has centre opening with no fasteners. The vest is close-fitting to the waist, then flares by means of triangular inserts in the side seams. The lower front pieces overlap at the centre and the bottom corners are fastened up. There is a small pocket concealed in the lower right front seam. The large embroidery panels are hand sewn and cover the neck, upper front, sides and bottom hem. The panels have a geometric design in red-orange, black and off-white, metal beads and fringe. The inside is unlined.

Mask made from cut out planks of wood formed in a rectangular-like shape with flat sides, an adjoining nose piece and two cylindrical shaped pieces of wood at the back. Detailed in red, black and green Northwest Coast stylized forms with rectangular shaped ears, bared teeth and large eyes. Hanging from the back bar are short, thin strips of cedar bark. (Similar to A4495).

Dance ShirtA6797

Tunic-like painted shirt made from cotton fabric. The shirt is made from a rectangle of cotton folded in half, machine-stitched along the edges to make side seams, leaving 25 cm unsewn for the armholes; 6 cm fringes cut horizontally along the seams. The neck is cut out of the centre of the cloth, with a hand-stitched seam. The main crest on the front represents a double-headed raven with outspread wings painted mainly in black with dark red and pale yellow highlights. The top of the back panel is painted with a creature's face in red and black.

Long cream cotton shirt with embroidery. The shirt has a small standing collar, deep v-neck opening, long sleeves and flared bottom half. The panels of embroidery cover the collar, v-neck opening, sleeve ends and bottom hem. The panels have a geometric design in red-orange, black and off-white, worked with tightly twisted wool thread. Some of the embroidery around the front opening has been removed; at one time there was a tuck around the waist and sleeves, to shorten the garment, and traces of hand stitching remain. All seams are hand-sewn. The inner collar and sleeve edges are lined with red cotton; the rest is unlined.

Ankle ornaments (parts a-b) consisting of a lunette shaped piece of hide with brown hair, bordered with red and grey alternating seeds. Hanging from the bottom are strings of seeds (red and grey) with portions of a large brown seed. Tied to the hide is a large, central sunburst design of brown seeds, on either side is a small star shape made out of red and grey seeds with a central brown seed. There is thin fibre twine attached to either side.

Ankle ornaments consisting of a rectangle piece of hide with mottled brown hair attached, bordered with grey and brown seeds. Hanging from the bottom are strings of cane and seeds. Tied to the hide are two sunburst designs of brown seeds with a red and black seed in the centre and a large, hemispherical brown seed between them. Part a has an additional cluster of seeds. Part b has a white and red feather attached.

Headdress made from a hide headband with various articles attached to it. The hide band--which is covered in several shades of brown fur--has five pointed protrusions: three at the front and two at the back. The three protrusions at the front of the band have spherical, halved gourds sewn onto them; the central protrusion features a plume of black, brown and blue feathers attached behind the gourd. A fringe of halved brown seeds dangles from the bottom rim of the headband.
