Feast Dish LidNb3.1352

Large carved, dark brown head with pronounced features like hollow cheeks and eyes, pursed lips, elongated slightly hooked nose and one thick double-arched eyebrow over both eyes. Back hollowed out: two joined pieces form oval tapering to base that has neck-like projection hollowed out in front. Forehead's centre has borehole; nails hammered into head's top; some red pigment on nose and temples; forehead, eyebrow, and nose are textured by small diagonal cuts in surface.

One elbow-shaped dark brown wood piece cut from trunk and branch of tree. Smooth, long handle increases in outside diameter to pointed top from which thicker haft extends downwards at approximately forty-five degree angle. Haft's top surface cut away for blade to be lashed and nailed, both blade and lashing now missing. Two nails still present. Underside of haft's base end has large lashing projection.

Bentwood BoxNb3.1347 a-b

Bentwood box; kerfs cut both on exterior and interior, fourth corner nailed; three sides, except back, decorated each with one panel of horizontal, finely chiselled grooves. Lid (part b) with adzed surface is slightly wedge shaped, with ridge at back projecting upwards. Cedar stitching on front and right side over split. Base pegged (?). Box lashed and knotted on all four sides with two-ply cedar bark rope, loose and fallen down close to base. Underside of box has a different type of rope used.

Rectangular mat. The mat is plaited with twilled and checkerboard weave designs. There are bands of geometric diamonds in dark brown and green-brown woven on the horizontal and vertical. The diamond design creates a wide border and forms three sections within the mat. The undecorated areas are woven with the checkerboard weave. There is a wide bark strand edge.

Female doll elegantly and elaborately dressed in traditional costume. Gold headdress decorated with two silver metal flower bunches at each side of head and tied on with orange cord. Red bow and red and gold with white blossoms in hair. Kimono lined with red then pink cloth has long train trailing onto base and is tied at waist with red sash. Her right foot shows from under the long, tight red skirt. black and gold with multi-coloured circular motifs decorate kimono. Gold and red drum with orange cord and motif of 'tomoe' on each side in green, orange, and dark purple, is tied below waist. Figure stands on wood base and is turned sideways. Her left hand is in the air about to strike the drum with a black, gold-tipped drumstick while her right hand is bent at side and is also about to strike the drum.

One piece of red brown wood, all adze marks apparent; roughly cut and shaped. Butt end shaped into blunt pointed knob. Sides of knob taper quickly into shaft which swells halfway up its length then tapers just below club end. Cylindrical club is longer than wide, flares quickly from shaft into cylinder shape and finishes off in a blunt point.

Wearing a floral robe of red, yellow, green, pink, and light brown with trousers to match, and black sandals. Joined in the shoulder, elbow, waist, hips, hands, and fingers with plastic rivets on the arm parts, and hide rivets on the body. Black horn bent at right angle following length of hair connected to sideburn with black string.

A shadow puppet of a Chinese man with a wrinkled face, short black hair, and a long moustache. Wearing a red hat with yellow plumes on the back and two flowers. Wearing black high cut Manchu laced boots and intricate floral robes with trousers to match. Three horn handling sticks, one at the back of the head bending downwards at a right angle, tied with black string, and one at each hand tied also with black string. Plastic rivets connect parts, shoulder, elbows, hands, waist, and hips. One boot shows completely while with the other, only the foot appears from under the long robes.
