Raven RattleNbz798

Rattle depicting a horizontal raven with a straight beak, which rests upon the bird's chest. The wings are at the sides and there are five splayed protruding tail feathers at the bottom. The bird figure is painted blue with red accents delineating the beak and feathers. A long unpainted handle extends from the base of body. There is a horizontal cut through the body and the handle. The two pieces have been nailed together with one nail, which is located in the handle at base of the raven's body. The nail protrudes through the underside of the handle. The hollow body likely contains pebbles, which create noise when shaken.

Dog Collar RattleIe335

A dog collar of heavy rattan, tied into a knot. From it, there are suspended four rattan loops, of a doubled length approximately 6 cm. The ends of each loop are threaded through a hole in a seed pod. The four seed pods are irregular in shape, approximately 5 cm. long and 3 cm. thick and hollow with a rough veined surface. A section of each has been cut out.

A bamboo section of a pipe with two segments. The top segment has been perforated to allow passage of smoke to the mouthpiece, which is simply an upper cut end of bamboo section, where 15 cm. from the bottom of the pipe, there is a hole 1.5 cm. in diameter, blackened by smoke, apparently for insertion of tobacco.

Set of cylindrical gambling sticks with knobs on each end. (a) has three evenly spaced red lines around the circumference, at centre, crossed by a dark stain and three dark spots on one side. (b) has three evenly spaced thin black lines at centre and spots to one side. (c) has three evenly spaced red lines, a black line at one side and several spots at opposite end. One spot towards lines side. (d) has a black, red, then black line towards one end. (e) has three closely spaced thin black lines to one side; dark stains on this end. (f) has four red lines near centre; (g) has three black lines at centre with a black and a red shadow-like stains diagonally across centre; (h) has three faint red lines, evenly spaced at centre; (i) is stained red on one end with a black line towards centre and a shadowy black stain diagonally around centre. (j) has three red line near centre, a fourth red line near red stained end. Two white paint spots at this end. (k) has three red lines evenly spaced at centre and two black lines to one side. Stains near centre and white paint spots to one end. (l) has five spaced lines from centre, the outer two are thicker. (m) is undecorated.

An arrow shaft, 94 cm. long, binding to a point, of pitpit (sword grass). The point is bound to the shaft with a 10 cm. wide band of trade cord coated with yellow clay. The point is triple made of three flat bamboo slivers bound to the outside of the shaft, each projecting 10.5 cm. beyond the shaft and 1 cm. wide, tapering to a sharp point, flaring out from the shaft.

A pair (parts a-b) of earrings consisting of an end section of snail (conus?) shell. Shaped like a 'c' with a small opening (.5 cm.). Convex side is smooth while concave side has natural concentric grooves. One earring (part a) is more yellow in colour, slightly narrower, and less regular in shape while the other earring (part b) is white.

Hair PinEd1.271

A flat hairpin made of gold-coloured metal tapering to an irregular point. A raised flower and an engraved stem decorate the pin. Above the flower, the pin widens into three discs, one above the other, each edged with a circle of tiny raised flowers. A small insect or flower shape is on the border between the discs. The top, and the bottom discs are inset with flat green stones while the middle disc is inset with a rounded red-orange stone. The uppermost green stone is incised with a curvilinear pattern. Chinese characters stamped on the back which is flat.

Tlingit Young WolfNb11.337

Small wolf mask with a long rounded snout pointed upwards. The lips and nose are painted red while the rest of the face and throat is green. The oval black eyes are painted in a natural coloured relief. A black band curves around framing the face. The ears are red and oval. Above the black band there is a natural coloured rim and a circlet of painted black and red oblong shapes. On the reverse ‘Tlingit Young Wolf' and ' J. David 80’ are printed.
