Sled CarvingNa678 a-f

Dog sled carving (part a) with five dogs (parts b-f). Sled made of two long runners across which are tied eight crosspieces with thread pulled through holes on runners. Linen fabric supports a seal covered by a sealskin, all bound to sled by leather strips. Leather harness secures dogs, all with straight legs and dark eyes, to the sled.

Whale vertebra formed into a pipe; hole drilled in the top and fitted with a copper bowl while a connecting hole is drilled in the back. Both sides cut and incised to depict the head of an animal; rectangular eyes inset with copper.

A string of 521 disc-shaped beads, mostly red-orange. The diameter of the beads varies from .2 to .6 cm. They are strung on a brown, hand spun cotton string. There are some beads of contrasting texture and colours like green, purple and black which may be stone.

Necklace composed of one complete strand and one broken strand of small, disc-shaped white beads which are strung on handspun and plied brown cotton. The beads are fairly regular in diameter, but vary in width between 0.1-0.3 cm. The ends of the cotton string are tied together in a knot. Total of 446 beads.

Smoothly finished, rectangular bone balance with no decoration. Three holes are drilled into one of narrow edges, only the centre hole goes through to the other edge; fibre twine fragments are in each. One hole is drilled through the width of the bar at the corner of the side.

Wooden crossbow (a) with a twined, fibrous cord (b). Bamboo crosspiece, tapering out from centre has carved dowell-shaped ends. Piece is centred passes through and at right angle to stock. Stock tapers at front end to two points and tapers from join leveling out towards butt end. Two notched rows along length of front end with remains of fur overall, added by gluing(?). Carved notch halfway down stock and dowell ends of crosspiece accommodate. Part b: length of twisted and bound fibre; two loops at each end for fitting over dowels; centre of length is reinforced with twisted bamboo for fitting into notch. Carved, articulated wooden trigger attached by dowel to stock.
