Flat unglazed base showing coarse grey-brown body; compressed barrel form rounding into short neck with a straight galleried lip. Two irregular grooves 2 cm. above the base give the impression of a foot. Covered in glossy opaque red-brown glaze, which displays fine iron specks, falling just short of the base, with one vertical reserved panel in opaque matte yellow-white slip. Some random grit incorporated in the glossy glaze, particularly near the base; minor flaws and scrapes on either side of the reserved panel.
A ceramic jar that has a broad base with a recessed foot. The body of the jar swells gradually, first in a concave, then in a convex curve reaching a maximum dimension at the shoulder, and incurves sharply to a small mouth. The coarse thick stoneware body is covered in white slip and decorated with underglaze in iron black with two similar motifs placed directly opposite one another, of which these consist of two "x" forms juxtaposed to form a central diamond shape, containing a sketchy floral form. The triangles created by other arms of the x''s also enclose minimal leaf forms. Covered over all by a thin transparent glaze showing a medium fine crackle.
Octagonal, with angles smoothed where planes meet; spout pinched out of rim; handle set at right angle to spout; white porcelain body glazed blue-white except at foot rim. Painted underglaze with dark grey-blue landforms from which spring floral motifs; enamelled overglaze with motif outlines in iron red and gold which is worn and dull; centred beneath spout, a circle enclosing the initial s, slightly off vertical; spout gold with red outline. Paper label reads "Marchant, London."
A ceramic plate which has a broad bottom, and sides curving up sharply in a cavetto terminating in rounded edge. Set on low, sharp, flaring foot. Glazed base has double red overglaze enamelled ring in centre. Grey-white porcelain body, glazed over all in white. Interior has phoenix and cloud forms on bottom. Aunning pattern of daisy-like flowers, with peony type leaves, is on the cavetto. A diamond trellis pattern just beneath edge. Exterior has a similar running floral pattern. All motifs outlined in red and all enamelled over the glaze.
A ceramic dish that has an angular form with steep, slightly flared sides. There is a small splayed foot and a grey-white body. Unglazed foot rim and base, which is convex with small point. Glazed inside and out with thick, opaque, white glaze which has formed a raised welt around the circumference of the dish a short distance below the rim.
Izumo ware ceramic tea caddy (without its lid). A small globular form on a flat spirally cut unglazed base showing fine light grey body. Thin translucent extremely shiny brown glaze, dark at the lip, with a broad splash of pale green-white flowing down the side, where the glaze stops in an even line short of the base.
Clay bottle consisting of a globular body with flat base, narrow neck with flared rim connected to shoulder by flat handle. Light brown surface with painted decoration in various states of preservation. Top of rim decorated with concentric circles; handle has zigzag pattern; shoulder decorated with tongues. Above and below figured scene are borders of horizontal lines; bottom of base in concentric circles. Figured scene consists of a male siren with spread wings in center, facing right, with anatomical details. Body primarily dark brown with red-brown areas on wings, throat, and breast. Leading edge of wings decorated with circles of red-brown. To right of siren is a water fowl, facing left with details. To left is a possible third figure. Between figures and in empty spaces are traces of dots and rosettes.
Clay bottle consisting of a globular body with a narrow neck, flat disk like rim. Sides of rim are slightly concave; flat handle connects rim and body at rear. Surface is light brown and slightly leached. Top of rim is decorated with a dark brown circle. Body decorated in quatrefoil pattern in front of a central vertical oval with a line through it; arrow head shaped designs pointing to either side and are filled in with black crosshatching. Radiating from central oval are four elongated teardrop designs; two projecting upwards, two downwards in shades of brown. Bottom decorated in simplified blossom pattern between teardrops projecting from front. Body below handle designed in dark brown consisting of intersecting lines.
Clay jug consisting of a globular body with a narrow neck and flaring rim. Flat basket-handle mounted vertically on rim and small flaring spout on body in line with handle rising at an angle. Clay is cream in colour with a light cream slip and decorated in brown paint that becomes reddish when thinly applied. Detailing consists of a line along the middle of handle; neck and side of rim painted; below neck are four horizontal lines then a reserve band decorated with teardrop shaped blobs becoming very light at times; below this are three horizontal lines then a large reserve area with three horizontal at foot. Spout-body junction decorated with a dark circle.
