Ceremonial HeaddressN1.303

A headdress with a high vertical rounded front and flat top sloping downward to the back which is a shorter vertical band. Frame is of wire covered with intricately interlaced bands of black silk braid and fabric. Attached to the headdress with wires, there are highly perforated and layered gold-coloured brass roundels in the shape of flowers and leaves, all inlaid with various shades of bright blue kingfisher feathers outlined with metal. On and around them, there are many ornaments mounted on wires which include the following: bats made of pearls, flowers made of pink glass, gemstones inset in metal, green stone butterflies, and a large roundel of pink quartz. From the front of the headdress, there are suspended strands of pearls with coloured stone butterflies in the middle and stone drops at the end.

Attached to the headdress with wires, there are convex gold-coloured brass plaques in the shape of flowers and leaves, all inlaid with iridescent bright blue, and darker blue-purple kingfisher feathers outlined with metal. The centres of the flowers are formed of circles of many wires with rounded ends, surrounding inset stones in blue, and green.

Necklace1590/292

A necklace of 88 white glass beads and 12 green beads strung on wire. There is a large Latin cross with cloverleaf terminals, a sunburst engraved in the centre and zigzag engraving on the border. Two solid beavers hang on each side of the cross. Maker’s mark stamped on cross and beavers.

Necklace of beads, snakes and cross. 96 cylindrical red glass beads and 91 smaller round flat white beads alternate in a pattern. 4 double snake and 4 single snake pendants alternate between the beads on the lower half of the necklace. The double snakes cross over at two points. All snakes are attached to bead strand by rings through the mouth. They are etched with cross pattern along their length. A Lorraine cross with cloverleaf terminals hangs from the centre point. A sunburst is engraved in the centre of the top bar. Curvilinear marks on vertical and lower horizontal bar. Maker’s mark JA on snakes and AB in a circle on lower bar of cross.

Necklace of 60 light blue glass beads in groups of 4 and 2, alternating with 16 cobalt blue glass beads and 6 cylindrical yellow glass beads,. 6 hollow silver beavers with bottom plates are attached at regular intervals to lower half of necklace. A flat silver Latin cross with circle and zigzag border is attached at bottom midpoint. One cobalt blue bead is broken. Maker’s mark in cartouche on beavers and on cross. The crown is above the “TE”.

Necklace1590/284

Necklace of 101 glass beads and 5 hollow turtles strung on wire. There are 90 small red cylindrical beads and 11 barrel-shaped fancy “eye” and “stripe” beads. The small beads are separated at intervals by the barrel-shaped beads, 9 of which are predominantly pink and 2 predominantly black. The turtles all have zigzag engraving on backs and are spaced at intervals through lower half of necklace. The large turtle has engraved circles for eyes and two holes pierced in nose. The small turtles have embossed eyes and are strung through the nose. Large turtle is strung through pierced holes in front feet. All turtles have maker’s marks on back.

Flat round pendant with a cutout heart and a cutout Latin cross within the heart. Engraving on the pendant includes cones and pine needles. Zigzag engraving around the edge. A necklace of a large oval pendant and six smaller beavers separated by groupings of cylindrical glass beads, red beads with white centres, and red-and-white beads. The pendant and the beavers are strung with hide and wire. The arrangement of the beads between the beavers and between the pendant and the beavers on either side is one red-and-white, one red, four white, one red, one red-and-white. Pendant has an uneven raised edge and a central beaver figure. Above are a few branches, below and to the left of which are maker’s marks.

A necklace of 187 red and white beads. The lower beads are in groups of five (2 white, 1 red and 2 white) with a beaver strung at each fifth bead. There are six beavers on each side. At the base is a Lorraine cross. Completing the necklace on each side is a two-white and two-red bead pattern. Maker’s mark stamped on the beavers. Further stamp on the base of the cross.
