Shadow Puppet3340/1

Prince Rama wayang kulit (shadow puppet) from Ramayana series. Flat shadow puppet cut from hide, with long arms jointed with pins at the shoulders and elbows. He wears an ornate outfit and crown. The tips of the thumb and index are held together, while keeping the other fingers straight (Mudrā). Operated by three horn rods.

Two identical bowls (parts a and b) with the character "happiness" repeated in red around the outside. Bowls' interiors are covered with light blue enamel, while the outsides are finished in dark blue. Repeated scroll and floral designs on the inside and outside, respectively, are executed in blue, red and gold.

Stamped decoration includes scalloped red and green floral pattern. Gilt hand painted on rim. Maker's Mark: ENGLAND W.H. GRINDLEY & CO. Crazing and brown discoloration that has penetrated glaze on interior and exterior. J. Dougherty 12/03/2009

AMEC Analysis: Part: Base Pattern: Featheredge Date Range: 1880 to 1918 Comments: This vessel was manufactured in the later period of Hapsburg Austria, indicating an age range of 1880 to 1918. One clear glazed porcelain tea cup fragment. Gilding on handle and just below rim on exterior of cup. Maker's Mark: M.Z. AUSTRIA Beginning portion of "AUSTRIA" is missing, though Maker's Mark is still identifiable. Small crack on body near handle. Brown discolorations near handle. J. Dougherty 12/09/2009

Two fragments of a white earthenware plate with gilded edges and irregular (molded) rim. Fragments do not cross mend. AMEC Analysis: Part: Rim Comments: This piece consists of two body fragments and the base of a large soup dish with gold floral gilding around the rim. The base was glazed by dipping - the color is blue. Three fragments of a stoneware vessel. Decorations include molding, blue dip glaze on exterior base, and gilding on, and below exterior rim. Largest fragments labeled 45KI765/P14-45a, middle fragment labeled 45KI765/P14-45b and smallest fragment labeled 45KI765/P14-45c. Body pieces cross mend to one another but not the base. Fragments have some fragile edges. Yellow staining around gilded design. Interior glaze is crazing. L. Penttila 2/8/2010
