Cantonese Opera Lamp2701/19

An oil lamp made of low-fired ceramic with a roughly applied shiny green glaze over a buff-coloured body, which shows on the base. The top of the lamp is bowl-shaped, placed on a cylinder that flares towards the bottom, which is in the shape of a low saucer. There is a decorative ring slightly more than halfway up the cylinder.

Writing EquipmentM4.26 a-d

Paper case holding items used for writing. The thick paper is painted then covered with a coat of lacquer. The image on the case (part a) depicted is a miniature of a woman standing with an umbrella. Her appearance is a representation of the Safaviya period in Iran. Each side has two students seated while being taught by an older, male teacher. Bottom is red with gold border. Part b has a landscape image on the end while the rest is red with a black border. Part c is a metal container with a lid that contains pieces of fibre used to make ink. Part d is metal spoon with a leaf like bowl.

Urn (a) and lid (b) in the form of an elaborate house or temple with decorative floral patterns. Top of lid has two grotesque fish, a dragon and other animal-like motifs on the sides. Parts of the inside are glazed brown. The interior is blue and yellow on white. Inscription on bottom of urn dated back to Kuang Hsi Period (1875-1908).

Royal blue cotton tunic with rounded neck, wide short sleeves, side slits and side opening with frog closures. There are two black appliqué bands around the neck, sleeves and partway down the side opening. The inside is unlined.

A large vertically rectangular plaque of a birthday scene for an elderly man. The elderly man has a white beard, and he is wearing an accesorized hat. He is wearing a robe which is orange-red on the top with a two-toned blue trim that has a circle design and which has a dark blue geometric diamond-shaped design on the white bottom portion of the robe. He has a white waist belt with a dark blue ribbon tied just below and a long light purple front panel. Underneath, there is a cream-coloured garment that has vertical dark blue lines. His shoes are blue and purple, and he is sitting on a chair. While his left arm is resting on the arm of the chair, his right hand is extending toward the gift brought to him by a young boy who is coming toward him. The gift is a gold-coloured vase ? presented on a yellow dish decorated with pink flowers and greenery. The boy is walking on a yellow-green carpet that has a dark blue cloud and dark maroon-red flower design. The boy is wearing an elaborate gold-trimmed hat. He is wearing a pink-red robe with blue trim that has a green belt over yellow trousers that have a dark blue and dark maroon-red flower design. Behind the elderly man, there is a woman holding a fan. The fan has an oblong shape with a main design consisting of a circle surrounded by dark blue waves, and a bat ? in one corner with a green border that has dark blue circles. The woman has her black hair tied in a bun at the top of her head and adorned with pink flowers. She is wearing dangling pearl-like earrings. Her robe is two-toned blue that has a cloud design with a white waist belt with a dark blue ribbon tied just below over the dark blue and dark maroon-red geometric hexagonal floral design on the white bottom portion of the robe. There is a red bat flying over one corner. There is a red seal at the respective bottom corner. The porcelain scene is in a panelled wood frame with two contrasting burl panels at the top and at the bottom. There is an elaborate bronze handle at the top.
