Stringed Musical InstrumentEdz1367 a-b

Hexagonal wooden cylinder (cracked along one edge) indented in the middle with three raised horizontal wooden bands around open end; carved star-shaped floral wooden inset in open end; taut snakeskin cover on opposite end; rounded straight wooden stem with curved handle, decorated with two horizontal light wooden inlaid bands; two fluted wooden pegs, decorated with white/brown and light yellow/brown horizontal bands at one end. The pegs are attached at right angles to rectangular part of stem through two holes. There are two strings threaded through holes and wound around ends of pegs, and attached to pegs on side of sound box. Straight bow (b), curved at ends and threaded with gut, inserted under string.

Wearing a long black head cloth that has one gold-coloured dot, a dark blue sleeveless robe belted under the arms with red thread, which is over a red robe with multi-coloured striped sleeves, which is over grey trousers, white socks, and low light red shoes. Two pieces of white flannel hemmed with blue-green silk thread with a loop of the same at the top are sewn to the paper backing.

An all black Janus headdress; one of the heads has a multi-peg headdress, clean-shaven, open mouth revealing filed teeth, protruding lips, ears, eyes, short nose, and a vertical ridge high on the forehead. Second head has matted hair, beard, and other features similar to first. Both heads supported by a common neck merging into a round base. Skin covering wrinkled and broken in several places, revealing wood. Base hollow, interior painted black.

Wooden crossbow (a) with a twined, fibrous cord (b). Bamboo crosspiece, tapering out from centre has carved dowell-shaped ends. Piece is centred passes through and at right angle to stock. Stock tapers at front end to two points and tapers from join leveling out towards butt end. Two notched rows along length of front end with remains of fur overall, added by gluing(?). Carved notch halfway down stock and dowell ends of crosspiece accommodate. Part b: length of twisted and bound fibre; two loops at each end for fitting over dowels; centre of length is reinforced with twisted bamboo for fitting into notch. Carved, articulated wooden trigger attached by dowel to stock.

Mace head composed of a short, heavy cylinder modelled with identical faces on two sides. These are separated by protuberant, round ears. White shell inlays in eyes, mouth, ears and cheek areas have drilled holes and incised details. One inlay (b) is dislodged. One ear inlay is thinner than the other three and does not have an engraved circle like the others.

A dagger with a long, tapered, brown and black bone (human? or cassowary?) blade with a modelled red clay handle in the form of a human head. The face is painted black and white and is inlaid with a cowrie shell for each eye. It has a double headband made of cowrie shells and black curly human hair adhered to the 'head'.

An oblong-shaped mask in blackened wood with cut-out eyes and mouth. Two small bumps on the forehead. Large eyebrows. Top of the head, the upper lip, and the jaw areas have been plastered with red clay, and gum, painted over in black, inlaid with cowrie shells, and human hair, held in place with glue.

Double-barbed metal point (part a) has a sinew-wrapped metal prod and is glued into a reed collar bound in sinew. A carved wooden insertion stub (part b) joins this collar to the hollow reed shaft which is bound at each end with sinew, and notched at the proximal end.
