Bentwood BowlNb667

Large rectangular bentwood dish with an undulating rim and painted designs in black and red, on sides and ends. Wide red band around rim is faded. The dish has three kerfed corners and is pegged together with 7 nails at the fourth corner. The base is pegged to the sides with nails.

Four-lobed form with irregularly hammered background. Has an overall patina; nakago ana has chiseling and copper insert for adjustment to the blade; open kodzuka, no kogai. Front: at bottom in high relief a leopard looks upward to a bamboo in low relief growing up the right side and across the top; leaves overlaid with gold. Back: at bottom centre, several broad curved gouges and a series of dots suggest leopard's claw and pad marks; two gold and copper spots inlaid.

Oval-shaped metal sword guard with triangular hole at centre and ovoid hole to one side. Low relief depiction of a male figure with a hat and sword in profile on one face. The figure's face is copper inlay, the beard is incised, and the hat is gold inlay. Incised tree with one branch on reverse. Made of shicuichi (bronze and silver alloy), open kodzuka, no kogai.

Arrow with long cylindrical wooden shaft with one end notched and broken. The other end has a metal point that is secured with wrapped sinew. The metal point is round at shaft end, but the pointed end has been flattened and cut. The opposite end of the shaft is stained with red pigment, possibly ochre, and has 2 strips of feather secured with sinew.

Oval, metal sword guard with four-lobed edge, triangular hole at centre, and ovoid hole to side of centre. Surface slightly raised above rim on both sides, overall brown patina, lightly hammered background. Low relief design of a farmer with overlaid gold clothing standing on a road and holding a rope that is attached to a bronze inlaid water buffalo with overlaid gold bales on its back. The buffalo stands in shallowly incised swirls of water with gold and copper water plants. At top an incised line of mountain peaks with three inlaid copper snow drifts. Back: at bottom left an incised swirl of water, scattered with copper blossoms. Open kodzuka, no kogai.

Arrow consisting of a long cylindrical wooden shaft with one notched end and a metal point at the other, secured with wrapped sinew. The triangular point has a double notched base and a narrow stem. At the midpoint of the metal stem has an oval hole. String is tied around stem where stem enters the shaft. At opposite end of shaft are two strips of feather secured by wrapped sinew. Red pigment, possibly ochre, is present on the basal end. The basal end of the shaft is notched.

One face has a low relief design of two swallows, a tree and two rice bales, and the reverse depicts a tree trunk and roots. Engraved with Japanese characters. Oval; sentoku, evenly hammered background; nakago ana adjusted with chiselling; open kodzuka adjusted with shakudo insert, no kogai. Signed to left of nakago ana. Front: on right, two slightly raised rice bales with a copper swallow superimposed, a bare branch curving above; another swallow descends from upper left. Back: on lower left a tree root with scattered blossoms at base.
