BasketD1.441 a-b

Part (a) Cylindrical coiled cedar root basket (bifurcated stitches) with double loop border, short foot and lid, part (b). Watch-spring base and lid construction. Imbricated design of three rows of diamonds alternating in checkerboard colour configuration between dark cherry bark outline with cat-tail grass (?), red cherry bark, cat-tail grass (?), and dark cherry bark center; and the reverse colours outlined in red cherry bark and at center between cat-tail grass (?) and dark cherry bark. Lid has half triangular shapes around rim then four full diamond shapes in alternating checkerboard colour configuration, then two rows of staggered triangular shapes in same colour combination. Coil handle at center has broken off. Foot has two stitches of beading alternating between dark and red cherry bark, at intervals. Bottom of basket is also imbricated with checkerboard triangular design in two alternating rows.

Burden BasketD1.440

Rectangular slightly flared coiled basket (bifurcated stitches). Parallel splint base construction. Upper half of basker is fully imbricated in cat-tail grass (?), with design on upper half of basket of zig-zag pattern outlined in dark cherry bark, then cat-tail grass (?) and red cherry bark center. Alternaing intervals of red and dark cherry bark along rim. Lower half is imbricated with zig-zag pattern with flat bottoms and tops, in cat-tail grass (?). Two rows of dark cherry bark imbrication on bottom. Two rawhide loops and long knotted handle on one long side, one loop at center and long knotted handle on other long side, one long thong on each short side.

Imbricated design in two staggered rows of diamond shapes, alternating between black cherry bark outline, then cat-tail grass (?), and red cherry bark at center, and red cherry bark outline with cat-tail grass (?) and a dark cherry bark center. Top row of imbrication near rim alternating between red cherry bark stitches and dark cherry bark stitches. Foot has the same configuration as near rim.

Imbricated design of wide vertical bands, different on each side; one side with checkerboard of red cherry bark and grass, and half of band in dark cherry bark and grass; one band has geometric shapes in grass with red bark background; next has grass geometric shapes outlined in dark bark; next has red bark and grass in checkerboard pattern, with larger square, and smaller squares at bottom; next has wide band of dark cherry bark and grass in checkerboard pattern. String through one corner at rim.

Small rectangular coiled basket (bifurcated stitches) elongated watch-spring base construction; foot of 3 coiled rows. Imbricated design has zig-zag band in black cherry bark, cat-tail grass (?) and red cherry bark near top edge. Below this on longest sides are two vertical rectangles with horizontal rectangle in center. On two short sides is one horizontal rectangle. Foot has 2 staggered rows of red cherry bark, cat-tail grass (?), and bladk cherry bark. Fibre tied on short side of basket.

Part (a) Flared oval coiled basket (bifurcated stitches) with foot and exaggerated domed lid, part (b), with handle at centre. Fully imbricated in tule grass with designs extending from lid to body, in diamonds on short sides outlined in red cherry bark, tule grass with dark cherry bark center; on long sides is a large square, outlined in black cherry bark, with red cherry bark rectangles at each corner also outlined in dark cherry bark. Top of lid has "cluster of flies" checkerboard motif in red and dark cherry bark. Corners of lid have vertical bands of dark cherry bark. Coiled handle with cherry bark beading. Foot has two rows of beading in tule grass, which suggests this basket may have been made by a basket maker from Spuzzum, B.C.

Large flared rectangular coiled basket (bifurcated stitches) with skin tumpline and string ties. Parallel base construction. Upper portion of basket is fully imbricated in cat-tail grass (?), with bow tie-like design, outlined in dark cherry bark and red cherry bark with two thin parallel vertical lines in red cherry bark. Lower portion of basket has alternating vertical bands of "cluster of flies" checkerboard pattern, in cat-tail grass (?) with red cherry bark, and cat-tail grass (?) with dark cherry bark.

The design from the bottom to top: three rows of double zigzags in red on bullrush ground; stepped pattern in bullrush; horizontal line with discrete shapes; one stepped pattern; discrete shapes on bullrush ground; concentric squares and double diamonds connected by horizontal line. Four rawhide ties; one twine tie and one braided fibre rope on the front. Colour: tan.

Natural coiled cedar root storage basket (part a) with a lid (part c) and a handle (part b). Simple interlocking coiled work with bifurcated stitches on the sides. Parallel slat bottom and lid (sewn at edges), and a single slat, coiled foot. Cross-stitched border to the lid. Red and black geometric pattern. The lid (part c) has a large red and inner black triangle-diamond shape formed of single, unattached imbrication. Additional black stitches at the edges. The basket (part a) front and back have two detached tri-colour figures, a diamond shape above an outward curling v shape, with vertical tri-colour bands on each side. The sides have two tri-colour chevron figures on each side. The basket (part a) has two handles, one of which is attached and the other of which is detached (part b).
