Basketry MatNd586 a-d

Set of four coiled cedar root basketry mats. Mats are oval in shape with double interlaced coiled border. Each mat is decorated with different designs. Part (a); is decorated with alternating dark and red cherry bark with grass in center. Part b has a circular pattern of rows red cherry bark. Part c has four adjacent triangles of red cherry bark and grass. Part d has alternating red and black cherry bark triangles.

Basketry TrayNd585

Small round coiled cedar root tray with watch-spring coil construction and two handles. Handles are formed from top two rows of coils. Rim and handles have braided edges. Side walls consist of four rows of coils that have been decorated with black beading. Two sets of beaded cherry bark circles in centre of tray, both have a row of red, then one of black, then another of red. The last set also have imbricated designs above them - half diamonds which alternate in colour, red and black.

Round coiled cedar root basket (part a) with lid (part b). Cedar slat foundation with parallel slat base construction. Foot made of one slat or row. Two overcast handles. Imbrication in black and red cherry bark and bullrush on body of the basket (part a) with a design that consists of alternating red and black quadruple v-lines around the sides and cross like shapes around the rim. Beading in red and black cherry bark on the lid (part b).

Baby CarrierA6952

Coiled cedar root baby cradle with slat foundations and simple interlocking coiled work. Overcast rim with additional loopwork at the head. Rim is beaded in black cherry bark (3:1), over/under. Body of cradle has first two rows beaded in white grass. Five rows per slat with butterfly pattern in red and black cherry bark over the rest. One side is slightly different from the other.

Coiled basketry table constructed from cedar splints and unidentified wood foundation. Coiled cedar root elements and watch-spring construction of table top. Rim of table is finished with loopwork. Imbricated triangular designs on table top in red and black cherry bark with cat-tail. Legs are nailed on to table top. An overcast ring has been attached to the legs as a support structure. This ring or support has broken.

Rim of table is finished with a whipped stitch. Imbricated design on table top and shelf in red and black cherry bark forms five sided star.

Basket (part a) and lid (part b) with cedar slat foundation and cedar root coils. Simple interlocking coiled work with parallel slat base construction and reinforcing stitches. Flange on the base of the basket (part a). Foot is composed of one slat. Imbrication and beading in black and red cherry bark and cat-tail grass. Body is covered with black and red tapering V designs. Lid (part b) has four black beaded panels on top with red stepped beading around the sides and black beading around the rim.

Rectangular coiled cedar root basket with a lid and two handles. Parallel slat base and wall and lid construction with overcast rims on both the basket and the lid. Overcast handles extend across the basket and are attached to sides with leather ties. Large imbricated designs in black and red cherry bark with canary grass in between are on both the basket and the lid. Designs are diamonds or zigzag motifs. Leather hinges attach the lid to the basket along one side, while thongs are present on the lid and adjacent area of thebasket on the opposite side.
