Container narrowing at top and bottom. The base (a) is concave and the mouth rim is tightly wrapped. The container is coiled in ten vertical sections. Cowrie shells are knotted on at the shoulder. The lid (b) also has cowrie shells knotted on just above the lip.

Cantonese Opera HatN1.796

The folded hat is light brown and rectangular with a rounded top piece curling down on either side. The hat has a light brown centre panel which folds inwards on both sides. Embroidered on the centre panel are two pink peonies with green leaves and gold swirls and a pink and red bat. On the inside of both side folds is a red peony with green leaves and gold swirls. The rounded top piece has pink and red peonies with green leaves and gold swirls. The curled ends have a small purple flower and an attached maroon tassel. The designs on the back of the hat mimic those on the front. There are pink and red peonies, green leaves, gold swirls and small purple flowers. On the inside of the hat is ecru lining, stiffened with cardboard. Two ecru ties are attached.

The bag is natural coloured and heavily fringed with a band of geometric design. The band has large black diamonds with black and natural coloured bent lines in between. Above the geometric band there is a heavy fine fringe connected to the top of the bag. Beneath the band there is another heavy fine fringe. Overlaying the band on both sides there are three long bunches of fringe, paired with three thin rectangular pieces of bark. Beneath the lower heavy fringe there are three more long single bunches of fringe with three more thin rectangular pieces of bark on both sides. The top of bag has a multi-strand knotted fringe on both sides surrounded with woven triangles. Two braided fibre handles with a single long fringe are woven to the top points of the triangles.

Saddlebag woven from twined grass with a u-shaped body, segments of twine joined with black cloth to form a band that wraps around the base of the body, and two straps that emerge from the top and loop back behind the body. The straps are interwoven with bands of twined red, blue, purple and black cloth.

Skirt with strands of bark (?) extending down from a navy cloth waistband that has several points along the bottom edge, each point ending in a dark blue bark (?) tassel alternating with natural brown bark (?) tassels at the peaks between the points, and is decorated with shells, seeds, and yellow and blue tassels. Saddle Blanket1376/12

Multi-coloured saddle cover constructed of wool cut pile textile and decorated with complex geometric forms representing plants and animals. Roughly square in shape, but with two adjacent corners cut off at 45-degree angles to accommodate the shape of the back of the saddle. There is a 10 cm slit at the opposite end, close to the edge. Side edges are selvage; front and back edges are turned once and secured with a coarse running stitch.
