A black brimless hat, light brown on the inside, with an oval opening for the head. Made of fabric pasted over heavy paper, lacquered black which has then been cut and folded to form the hat which is held together by lacing with a heavy twisted cord at the back. The two cuts form diagonal lines at each side, ending in two points at the upper front. There is a fold parallel to the wearer’s shoulders across the top of the hat, from which a straight-sided flap forms the outside of the back. This is attached to the ends of the wrapped front panel at the centre back with lacing. A narrow edging of paper is pasted along the lower edge of the hat. Small tassels of twisted yellow silk cord at the back. There is lacing of grey-white paper cord.

Part a is the overall box structure; parts b and j are red railings; parts c and e are gold-coloured stands; parts d and f are gold-coloured candle stands; part g is a lotus-shaped stand; part h is a stand that apparently has had a (formerly separate) Buddhist Bodhisattva figure (N2.838 a) glued onto it; part i is a vase attached to its own stand; part k is a black fence; part l is a table; part m is a gold metal bracket for table; part n is a stand for table; part o is a stand with feet for encasing part a; part p is the base for under part o.

Folding FanN3.55

A closing fan made of twenty-six flat bamboo ribs lacquered dark brown with tapering end pieces of natural colour bamboo. Edges of the ribs curve inwards just below the point where they reach the paper cover of the fan, which is white. Fan is held together with a brass rivet that has a small ring on one side. Rivet is set into wooden ends of a slightly darker colour, which flare outward at the base.

Cup-shaped brass gong (part a) with a rounded bottom and two dragons and a crest design in slight relief around the top. Gong rests in a raised, five-legged wooden stand (parts b and c); stand is lacquered in red and gold. A stuffed ring-shaped cushion of brown and taupe-coloured, floral pattered fabric rests inside the top section of the stand (part c). Part d is a cylindrical hide-covered beater with a red lacquered wooden handle.
