Model CanoeA1146 a-c

A light brown unpainted model canoe (part a) with elongated ends. Two male figures (parts b-c) painted in black, and red are seated at opposite ends. The interior of the canoe (part a) has an inner rim. The two nailed seats at opposite ends of the canoe fit the contours of the boat. One end of the canoe has a vertical groove while the other end does not. Both men (parts b-c) are painted with black facial features, excluding the red nose, and the red mouth. Their hands, and feet are red. Their clothes are black. They are sitting with their knees bent. One man (part b) has his right hand turning inward with his left hand turning downward while the other man (part c) has his right hand turning downward with his left hand turning inward. Both men (parts b-c) are detached from the canoe (part a).

MaskA6347

Mask with short lengths of cedar bark attached in bundles at the sides of the head and at the cop centre of the head. The mask is painted white with slanted eyes outlined in red, a red hooknose, red pursed lips, and an angled brow with off-white skin nailed to the eyebrows. The cheeks and chin are decorated with black and red curved linear designs, and there is a semicircular black design element above the top lip. A length of off-white string is attached through holes at the back of the mask.

Cantonese Opera ShoesN1.766 a-b

Pair of tiny shoe forms with blocks of wood inside, carved to simulate very small shoes, and extended in "shoe-horn" shape to provide actual foot support. All concealed under embroidered cover for false shoe with tall cotton cuff attached. False shoe: leather and brass sole, wedge heel; floral motifs, pink, brown, mauve, on turquoise ground; upper: floral motifs, pink and turquoise on ecru ground; edging: brass and mirrors, with twisted copper wire, on dark blue ground. Cuff: floral ribbon appliqued at junction with uppers. Black cotton rectangle appliqued above at front with attached ecru loops (4) - balance of ecru cotton. Loops hold cord to keep cuff in place.

All concealed under embroidered silk cover for false shoe, with tall cotton cuff attached. Fake shoe: leather sole, wedge heel; floral motifs, yellow, orange, pink, on turquoise ground; upper: floral motifs - gold, turquoise on red ground, red and gold braid edging. Cuff: at front, one blue, one black cotton rectangle, with ecru loop attached, balance ecru cotton. Loops may have served to hold cord to keep cuff in place around foot. Pair.

Pair of Cantonese opera shoes, the leather sole shaped to simulate very small shoe, with wooden "shoe-horn" attached at heel to provide actual foot support, hidden under silk upper and attached cotton cuff. Upper: scroll design, silver sequins on white ground edged with black cord all on red ground, with scattered purple sequins. The off-white cotton cuffs each have an off-white cotton rectangle at the front with a loop attached on either side near the top on part a, and two loops at the top on part b. Balance of cuff, ecru cotton. Loops may have served to hold cord to keep cuff in place around foot. Cotton insole.

Large mask with a protruding short cylinder that has a hole in the centre on the forehead, slightly bulging eyes, a hooked and upturned nose, curvilinear bands and incised lines representing gill slits extending from the sides of the nose to the centre of the chin underneath the lower lip, angular protruding lips, and a hole on either cheek with a raised rim around each. The mask is painted with black, red and white on the forehead, heavy black eyebrows, green over the nose and around the eyes with a scalloped edge representing scales, red and green nostrils, white on the cheeks with white red and green on the rims around the holes, red and white gill slits, black around the red mouth and on the chin. There are two triangular holes below the nostrils, and there is a wooden bar at the top back.

Mask with a furrowed brow, bulging round eyes, gill slits on temples and cheeks, pursed lips, and four holes in each cheek. A loon figure with a rotating head is perched on top of the mask. Red, green, black, white and orange. The mask is painted with heavy black brows underlined with red, green around the eyes and over the nose, red nostrils, black cheeks and temples, a black moustache, red lips, and a grey chin. The loon is painted with black eyebrows, green around the eyes, orange edges on the beak, black bands and black dots around the neck, grey on the top of the body and white on the sides and chest. The holes in the face represent air bubbles.

Instrument with seven metal prongs attached at an angle on a concavely curved wooden closed sound box; carved with "Nindakule". A slightly curving row of four holes near the middle and three more holes in a triangular formation at the end opposite the metal tongues (keys). A row of three holes at the end near the triangular formation with three curved points at the other end near the metal prongs. On the wood, there is a metal loop at either sides of the metal prongs.
