Headdress959

Tall, glossy black dorsal fin, hair streaming from the trailing edge, is the mark of the killer whale: the most imposing natural animal of the Tlingit world and a crest of the Wolf phratry. Here the orca is combined with the wolf itself in a powerful crest headdress, collected by George Emmons from the Stikine Tlingit. Emmons did not identify the clan that owned the headdress, but described it as of "totemic significance," worn by the chief--to whose care it was entrusted--only upon special occasions when the whole family was present. (Holm, Spirit and Ancestor, 1987)

An apron shaped like an extremely elongated oval and netted of bark fibre. The mesh is approximately 1 cm. Marsupial hairs are incorporated to form longitudinal stripes approximately 3 cm apart, with thirteen stripes in all.

Hollow globular calabash rattle with neck leading to a smaller globular shape open at one end. Sides of large globe are covered by a netting, incorporating dark brown seed beads which fit around neck at one end leaving the other end, the bottom of the globe, uncovered. A carrying string is attached to base of netting. Calabash skin is yellow and worn in spots to show natural calabash fibre underneath.

Two piece wood frame construction with three wooden crossbars. Pointed heel and toe, with the toe sharply bent, starting at the top cross-bar. Toe piece is open, otherwise hexagonal hide netting covers the spaces between the bars. Centre netting is attached around the frame, over cloth and leather. Diagonal strips cross over and under the horizontal strips in all sections, except adjacent to the toe hole. The section above and below the toe and foot section attach through the holes in the frame, to the outside. A hide strip runs the length of the outside, for these sections. The bent toe section has a hide strip which attaches through the side, on the inside to the bottom of the frame. Hide strips hold the toe and tail ends through holes in the top and the inside of the frame. 'b' has copper wire at the bottom lashing.

Bag composed of a net of fine hide thongs and a hide band across the top with a beaded leaf pattern in green, dark blue, green-blue, light blue, light pink, black and white. Larger white, green and blue beads are strung onto the net at the top and along one side. Hide loops and straps attached at the top of the band.
