Sculpture of a figure standing with the arms resting down the sides and bending at the elbows so that the hands are resting at the sides of the stomach. The partially oval rounded eyes are closed with the long thin nose extending from the high upraised brows. The mouth is prim. The hair is elaborately styled with incised lines. Around the neck, there is an orange and blue beaded necklace. The chest tapers into breasts with two vertical lines having diagonal grooves going down the centre of the chest. Two more horizontal lines having vertical grooves are around the front of the waist. The knees are slightly bent. On a circular base. Wood has been oiled and has now achieved the high sheen of a good, well cared for figure which characterises Baoule sculpture.
Large flat fan made of finely-split bamboo flaring out from its attachment point to a wooden handle painted black. Bamboo strips are bent downwards near the perimeter of fan, those on each side bending away from centre strip. Perimeter of fan is circular except for the lower edge where the handle is attached, which is straight and at right angles to handle. Fan is covered with brown oiled paper, with a narrow edging in black. The fan is inserted into a split in the handle, which is flat and shaped like a pointed oval where it covers the fan, which is attached with two rivets. The area surrounding the handle is covered on each side with a black paper cut in a floral pattern. The area immediately surrounding the handle is painted orange.
A hat of brown paper pointed at top and with four sections projecting from centre folds. When opened flat, the hat is triangular with points truncated at the base. An extra layer of paper with a serrated upper edge is adhered to the lower edge of the hat with another serrated strip adhered to the bottom edge of hat. Faintly visible bat shapes cut out of brown paper are adhered over the midpoint of each fold. A red paper-cut is adhered to the top of the hat.
Horizontal whale headdress that has a carved skeletal body, dorsal fin attached to black spine by wooden wedge and glue; black hair, ends wrapped in wire, have been inserted into five drilled holes along back of fin; light blue band, close to top of fin, has a circular hole; carved profile face at base has square abalone shell teeth; fin outlined in black; backbone has unpainted spaces between disks, four pieces of inlaid abalone on each side of fin; circular hole at neck; tail flukes have incised triangular areas between two black ovoid eyes, orange-red and light blue u forms on either side of eyes, flukes outlined in black; two curved ribs on each side attach to spine and black band base, final rib before tail is black; band base has two incised crescentic marks on each side, under tail flukes are two circular eyes with split u forms on either side, incised triangular design between eyes, crescentic shape above each eye; pectoral fins overlap band base and have u, ovoid and a tri-pointed design; head has a curved forehead with a vertical ridge between the eyes; orbital ridge melds with the snout and lip band; upper portion of eyes protrudes; black eyes in narrow pointed eyelid lines; upper incisors overlap lower lip band. Beneath jaw is an incised dogfish head with black brows, flat flaring nostrils and a wide continuous lip band. Underside of tail flukes signed: Dempsey Bob 1987; b imposed on a d/87.
Large rectangular yellow cedar panel, with a centre circular relief carving with painted orange-red primary form lines, black secondary form lines and anatomical features; negative space in and around carving is oiled. Image: two black side bands have frontal orange-red frogs with splayed bodies on either side of head, subtle differences in depiction of each frog. Central image: combines bird and mammal features; top half is frontal mammal's head with double split u ears, heavy bent brows, square-like pupils in pointed eyelid lines, broad flat snout joined to top of continuous lip band, six wide rectangular upper teeth; pointed beak joins bottom lip band, split u nostrils, wings, angled on either side of beak, have identical frontal animalistic faces, beside each face is a three claw foot. Signed at bottom corner on right: Bob/87, the letter D is carved over the letter B. Numerous tiny holes and oil spots along bottom edge.
A pestle shaped like an hourglass and carved from a single piece of wood. Each end is round with slightly flat bases and darkened. Surface is porous and centre has small carved ring.
Stool carved from a single piece of wood. Oval base forming arrow-shaped mid-section which forms into seat of stool. Seat is wider at the ends, and narrows in the centre. Sides curve slightly downwards. A braided leather handle is attached to the mid-section in two places through pierced wood, and knotted on other side.
Large steel knife with round carved wooden handle. Triangular blade with point at right angles to handle. Sharp on all edges. Two holes in centre of blade.
Stool carved from a single piece of wood. Rectangular seat with slightly upward curving, and flaring ends. Two rounded uneven legs. A piece of leather is wound around each lower leg then twisted around leather stretching piece between both legs. A leather loop fits loosely around twisted joiner.
Stool carved from a single piece of light brown wood. Stool has two wide set flaring legs, anda a short small seat. A thin iron rod goes through two holes near the top under seat.
