Round, dark red tray with raised gold coloured edge. Design in centre of the tray is in gold and consists of a landscape scene with sails, trees, mountains, birds, and a pavilion. Marked "Japan" on the back in gold.

Necklace1590/281

A necklace of 187 red and white beads. The lower beads are in groups of five (2 white, 1 red and 2 white) with a beaver strung at each fifth bead. There are six beavers on each side. At the base is a Lorraine cross. Completing the necklace on each side is a two-white and two-red bead pattern. Maker’s mark stamped on the beavers. Further stamp on the base of the cross.

Necklace1590/279

Necklace with 90 glass beads, 18 green glass beads, one blue bead, 2 red and black cylindrical beads, 8 flat turtles and one thick Latin cross with short cross bar and rounded ends. Turtles have cross-hatched engraving and the Jost hallmark. Cross is also engraved and has a stamp 'Boyer' on it. Necklace is threaded on string.

Standing wood figures (ibeji). Two male figures, with the one (part a) slightly smaller than the second (part b). Both have black hair indicated by incised line patterns. Each figure has incised tribal marks, four of which are vertical at the top middle of the forehead with another three vertical on the cheeks. Part a has four more, while part b has five more tribal marks vertical along the sides of the face extending at a diagonal angle downward along the middle bottom of the face. More tribal marks radiate from and point downward from the naval. There are also vertical tribal marks on the chest. Extended arms have hands touching thighs. The legs of each figure are very short in relation to body and the feet are fairly large. The first figure (part a) has a necklace of long red, white, and blue cylindrical beads with smaller beads of a similar kind around its waist, right wrist, and both ankles. The second figure (part b) has two strings of tiny brown beads around its waist with anklets of a similar kind to the first figure (part a). Each stands on circular pedestal.

Carrying CaseN2.966

Red, lacquered, oval-shaped case known as inrō (印籠), with five fitted sections stacked vertically. A purple cord tied at the base is threaded through two channels on either side, holding the five parts together. The fibre cord extends above the top of the box, with the two ends tied together and held in place with a cylindrical green ojime and an amber-like netsuke (根付). Designs featuring insects and flowers are lacquered and inlaid, predominantly in gold and black on the exterior; the interior is speckled red-orange and gold. The amber-like netsuke has two black insects painted on it.
