Strap1376/3

Very long, narrow, black and grey textile, decorated with many horizontal rows of resist-dyed or painted red disks that are overprinted or stamped with black cross-shaped motifs, like petals of a flower. Sections woven with wool or goat hair yarns alternate with sections woven with cotton yarns. Long black fringes at each end are made by tightly twisting the warp yarns.

A woman's hat made from a woven straw base that has been coated with gesso and formed into a boat shape by bending the brim down at each side. Brim is covered with black velvet, and cotton fabric. Crown is decorated with pleated embroidered red, green, black, and gold-coloured ribbon. Heavy threads attached to the underside of the crown to secure to the head.

Wooden box (part a) has stylized floral painted lid (part b) in red, blue, gold, green and white with two curved fingers hold in lower edge of lid. Inside there is a stack of sixty-one flat rectangular cards (part c) with various print designs. In order from top to bottom: seven cards have a grasshopper musician on the top left corner and two ants carrying an object on the bottom right corner, six cards have a fox on the bottom right corner looking up at purple grapes on the top left corner, six cards have a rabbit on the bottom right corner with a turtle at the top of a sunrise hill on the top left corner, eight cards have an animal on the bottom right corner with a frog on a pad on the top left corner, nine cards have a diamond and an orange jelly bean on the bottom right corner and a rooster with two chicks on the top left corner, two cards have a green stem with two yellow flowers in profile on the bottom right corner, two cards have a yellow and a blue flower on the bottom right corner, two cards have a green stem with one pink flower in profile at the top and one pink flower open toward the viewer at the bottom on the bottom right corner, three cards have a green stem and two yellow flowers open toward the viewer at the bottom right corner, two cards have a green stem and two pink flowers in profile on the bottom right corner, four cards have one three-leaf clover and one four-leaf clover on the top left corner, three cards have a green stem with a pink flower angled open from the viewer at the top and a bud at the bottom on the top left corner, two cards have a pink rose and a bud on the top left corner, three cards have a dark blue flower and a bud on the top left corner, and two cards have light blue flowers with yellow centres and a bud on the top left corner.

Rod PuppetIb303 a-c

Three-dimensional male humanoid puppet: large head (part b) fits into body with skirt (part a), and a control rod (part c) with a long shaft passes through the body and fits into the neck of the figure's head. The body has jointed arms, each with a long controlling rod attached. The figure's face is glossy pink with black moustache, sideburns and caste mark. White eyeballs with black pupils; four gold teeth exposed. Yellow neck; black backswept hair outlined in gold. Light pink, green, red, and gold crowns; same colours repeated in elaborate headdress which rises at back to a form resembling a bird with a lolling green tongue. Upper row of jagged teeth . Figure wears black jacket, pink upright collar, edged with red on front; wide green band around waist, narrow red belt. Jacket sleeves have inserts above the cuffs decorated with red braid. Red cord at back of neck forming epaulettes. Orange shoulder sash; white vest, small yellow piece of fabric at neck line. Long batik skirt, coloured cream, brown and black. Hands yellow.

Rod PuppetIb315

Three-dimensional male humanoid puppet: large head (part c) fits into gold painted body with skirt (part a), and a control rod (part d) with a long shaft passes through the body and fits into the neck of the figure's head. The body has jointed arms, each with a long controlling rod attached, and the figure's right arm (part b) has become detached. The figure has a dark pink face, a blunt nose; white eyes have dark red pupils. White protruding upper teeth with fang at each corner of mouth; black hairy moustache, painted beard. Headdress consists of black cap, blue-striped scarf around forehead, gold triangular sumping (ear ornament) behind ear and grey Garuda (mythical bird) above grey fringe of curls. Torso painted gold and covered with black velvet cloth. A black velvet apron is sewn to the waist with red glass beads in sun ray design and a band of woven gold thread and ribbon at waist. The figure is wearing a beige cotton with brown geometric batik design. Red and white carved bracelets at upper arms and wrists; hands upturned.
