DollN3.62 a-b

Doll (a) representing a male figure carved out of wood with articulated shoulders and ankles. His face and hands are painted white with painted black hair, eyebrows, eyes, a drooping moustache and a chin beard. He wears a separate black paper hat (b) with a narrow brim and black silk ribbons that tie in a bow under his chin. A nail at the top of his head helps keep the hat in place. He wears a long sleeveless blue silk vest, gored and pleated under the arms, and fastened with a dingle button over a gored long-sleeved white silk coat fastening with ribbons tied in a single loop. Beneath this are an under-jacket with blue ribbons tied in a single-loop bow and under-trousers. His ankles are wrapped in white material, and he wears pointed shoes made of paper (?) covered with white cloth and painted with black linear and looped designs at the front and back.

Cantonese Opera Headdress2701/12 a-e

Stiff headdress of shiny white fabric decorated with silver sequins (a), and including four additional numerous components that insert into the central portion of the headdress. The front is rounded and flat on top, with an oval disc of white plastic at the centre front. The back half rises at a right angle to the front and is bulbous and rounded at the back. Inserted into the bottom of the centre back are two wing-like projections (b,c), rectangular with rounded corners. Also inserted into the headdress, at the sides, are two leaf-shaped projections (d,e).

Cantonese Opera Flag HolderN1.840 a

Holder is green-blue and rectangular with black features and two long white ties. The holder flares out at the top and is made of leather covered with green-blue fabric. The features are adhered to the fabric in the shape of a Fu dog face. There is a wide pink mouth with white teeth, a large white nose, round white eyes with green pupils and pointed white eyebrows. The wrinkled forehead and other facial features are black. The white ties are threaded through the inside of the holder and knotted on the outside front in the lower corners. The back of the holder is covered in white cotton with black characters down the centre.

The folded hat is black and rectangular with a rounded top piece, a back flap and embroidered motifs. The hat has a black centre panel which folds inwards on both sides. Embroidered on the centre panel are orange and red peonies with green leaves and yellow swirls. On the inside of both side folds is a pink peony with green leaves and yellow swirls. The rounded top piece has pink and red peonies with green leaves and yellow swirls. Hanging down from the top piece on either side of the centre panel is a red streamer. On the back, the flap mimics the rounded top piece and extends down past the bottom of the folded centre panel, flaring out at the bottom. In the centre of the flap is a large orange and red peony. Surrounding the flower is a circle of gold scroll designs and peonies in red and orange with green leaves and yellow swirls. On the inside of the hat is ecru lining, stiffened with cardboard. Two ecru ties are attached.

The folded hat is light brown and rectangular with a rounded top piece curling down on either side. The hat has a light brown centre panel which folds inwards on both sides. Embroidered on the centre panel are two pink peonies with green leaves and gold swirls and a pink and red bat. On the inside of both side folds is a red peony with green leaves and gold swirls. The rounded top piece has pink and red peonies with green leaves and gold swirls. The curled ends have a small purple flower and an attached maroon tassel. The designs on the back of the hat mimic those on the front. There are pink and red peonies, green leaves, gold swirls and small purple flowers. On the inside of the hat is ecru lining, stiffened with cardboard. Two ecru ties are attached.
