Title page identifies the book as "Chinese Moral Maxims, with a free and verbal translation; affording examples of the grammatical structure of the language. Compiled by John Francis Davis, F.R.S. Two wood sticks adorned with stylized cherry blossoms, packages, dice, and charms. Colours are predominantly pink, gold, and white. The first stick (part a) has a dice, a package, and a red ball. The second stick (part b) has a dice, a package, and a red fish. Although both sticks have gold-coloured flat oval charms, the first (part a) has pink and black blossoms while the second (part b) has orange and black blossoms.
Banner composed of an off-white rectangle of cotton with a printed image in mostly dark blue with red, grey and brown. The image depicts a festivity scene with a crowd of boys supporting a boat like structure, some holding fans, and a bird atop the boat.
Cardboard box (part a) and lid (part b) of forty small, five sided tablets of wood with various characters printed on in red or black (parts c-nn). Thirty-four of the pieces are red on one side and black on the other. Six pieces are black on one side and plain on the other.
Carp-shaped windsock, decorated in bright colours, mainly red, gold, pink and yellow. Eyes are of green and yellow appliqued paper. Mouth is wired and a fibre string hangs from the opening.
Deer and cloud patterns, top border consists of scrolls. Blue on white, unmarked, for bonsai or flower arranging.

Seated male figure (part a) dressed in imperial costume, representing the Japanese emperor, with a lacquered headdress above his hair. His robe is predominantly purple (now faded), with red, gold and white. Platform (part b) is wood, in the shape of a book, covered in green cloth with dark orange and white binding.
Battledore paddle with a black handle. One side depicts two warriors in battle with one above, and behind the other. The back warrior has an orange armour with a wild cat fur tail, and one arm extending around above the head. The forward warrior has a purple armour with both hands in front of him. The other side has a painting of a hawk and a pine on the back with red and white blossoms.

The postcards are contained in a buff-coloured envelope (a), along with a folded sheet of white paper with a block of printed text (characters) on one side (b).
