Flat FanN3.52

Flat fan made of finely-split bamboo flaring out from its attachment point to a long wooden handle painted black. Perimeter of fan is circular except for the lower edge where the handle is attached, which is straight and at right angles to handle. Fan is covered with lacquered paper with a design of three swirls converging at the centre, coloured red, green, and yellow. It has a narrow edging of black paper. The fan is inserted into a split in the handle, which is flat and shaped like a pointed oval where it covers the fan, which is attached with two rivets. The shape of the handle is repeated with an outline of orange paint on the fan.

Flat FanN3.51

Large flat fan made of finely-split bamboo flaring out from its attachment point to a wooden handle painted black. Bamboo strips are bent downwards near the perimeter of fan, those on each side bending away from centre strip. Perimeter of fan is circular except for the lower edge where the handle is attached, which is straight and at right angles to handle. Fan is covered with brown oiled paper, with a narrow edging in black. The fan is inserted into a split in the handle, which is flat and shaped like a pointed oval where it covers the fan, which is attached with two rivets. The area surrounding the handle is covered on each side with a black paper cut in a floral pattern. The area immediately surrounding the handle is painted orange.

Folding FanN3.55

A closing fan made of twenty-six flat bamboo ribs lacquered dark brown with tapering end pieces of natural colour bamboo. Edges of the ribs curve inwards just below the point where they reach the paper cover of the fan, which is white. Fan is held together with a brass rivet that has a small ring on one side. Rivet is set into wooden ends of a slightly darker colour, which flare outward at the base.

Headband1590/286

Headband decorated with zigzag engraving. The upper edge has a cutout border, consisting of repetitions of a heart in a semi-circle alternating with twin pierced triangles topped by circular bosses. There is a band of cutouts below the hearts. An overlap at the back is rivetted together and an upstanding floral motif piece is rivetted to the front. Maker’s mark is stamped on the front and on the back.

Shallow crown headband. Two raised ridges around lower edge, then a row of cutout ellipses, then cutout hearts. Upper edge has reverse scallops with small circle cutouts in peaks. Zigzag line engraving around edges and cutouts. Band rivetted together. Maker’s stamp in three places.

Round coin with a four-sided hole in the centre, and a rim around the outer edge and the centre hole. The obverse has four characters, and the reverse has four characters. Jiaqing tongbao (top-bottom-right-left) in Chinese characters are on the obverse; qianlong tongbao (top-bottom-right-left) in Chinese characters are on the reverse. Three coins joined together; three holes drilled and rivets applied; rim filed down at an angle.

Box, circular in shape, of sheet brass with a shiny finish. The box has a hemispherical boss at the centre top surrounded by a ring with irregular small raised dots. Brass rings are mounted at either side of the box. The interior is divided into two semi-circular containers, each attached by a rivet so that they can swivel open in opposite directions.

Candle HolderEd1.186 a-l

Pair of brass candle holders, each composed of 6 parts. Parts a, g are bases, each having a round flat plate on single ring foot, incised with the design of 2 bats; on the centre is mounted a round post. Parts b, h are round plates with flat bases, straight sides and flat rim with round centre hole fitting over a and g respectively. Parts c, i each consist of a ring which fits over post of a or g below plate, one side of which is extended downwards. To this are attached 2 transverse round bars to the opposite ends of which is attached a hollow rectangular bar. Parts d, j hang over the lower transverse bars of c and i and each consists of a piece of heavy wire, bent into soldered elongated s-shapes. Attached to lower end of s is a 1/2 crescent pointing downwards, made of brass rod with finial on which is mounted a freely moving brass moth with fully modeled body. Parts f, l fit on ends of a and g and each consists of a brass tube at upper end of which is mounted a cup with outturned cup and 5 petal shaped pieces bent so that points nearly touch mouth. The post of part a has been broken from base and soldered back in place.

Round brass bowl (a) and lid (b). Bowl is on a flat base with ring foot. Rounded sides expanding to below midpoint, curving in slightly to mouth, which is 8.1 cm in diameter with rolled rim. Lid is convex with two parallel engraved lines at rim and has a separately attached knob at centre top. Knob is cone-shaped with bulbous knob at apex. Both pieces have dull patina.

Brass bowl (a) with lid (b); truncated sphere shape on a flat base and single ring foot. Contracts to mouth; thicker at rim. Dull patina outside; shinier inside. Lid is hemispherical with 2 concentric engraved circles on perimeter. Knob is riveted to lid, shaped like an inverted cone, bulbous at apex. Some green spots on lid.
