SwordK3.3 a-b

Sheath (b) and sword (a); metal blade with rope like motif, liner details and a stripe of yellow (brass?) metal on each side. The handle and sheath are covered in cowrie shells that are sewn diagonally with red-brown fibre. The shells on the handle cover a ‘b’ shaped piece of wood that attaches to the sword; the connection is covered by a stripe of skin. A rectangular area of skin is exposed at the end and opening of the sheath while the rest is covered with shells. There are also two skin tabs on the top and bottom along with a skin tip ending in numerous pieces of skin stripes with shells tied to the end.

The main part of the design consists of engraved cylindrical brass beads with various other beads throughout that start with a pair of rounded, concave brass semi-circles that have at either side until the other end that has a pair of engraved five-fingered/teeth comb-like brass beads and a rounded, concave brass semi-circle, the following: a green bead; a two-toned brown yarn tassel; a brown beaded figure with white heads that are held together with red and brown yarn; a yellow bead; a pair of engraved five-fingered/teeth comb-like brass beads; a two-toned brown yarn tassel; and a metal ring that has three protruding inset gems?

Beaded bag has a main geometric design consisting of vertical red zig zag lines outlined by black on a white background. Edged with light blue beads. Above this main geometric design, there is a plain rectangular fabric section bordered by blue, red, black, and white beads. Both designs are on both sides. On white cotton. Has a short red, white, blue, and black bead fringe. Leather handle edged with mostly blue beads along with sections consisting of a central red bead with a black and then a white bead at either side. Handle has thirteen holes along one side.

Articulated human figure carved of natural-coloured wood. Square body to which slender arms and legs are attached with white cotton cord. Hands and head are carved in detail. Face and hands are painted pink with details added to head in black. Knee-high black boots are painted in black and reinforced with black cloth tape. Genitalia indicated with incised lines.

Composed of two strips of hide as well as one horizontal and one vertical inserted bead work panel of predominantly triangular and diamond-shaped patterns, the horizontal panel has upward pointing black triangles on a white background while the vertical panel has red, green, and yellow diamond shapes outlined by white and black within alternating yellow and green square backgrounds. Two string loops of ostrich egg beads are at either sides and yellow and black and red and green trade beads hang from the back of the piece.
