NecklaceCh18

Necklace of wooden, oval, carved and inlaid beads decreasing in size to metal clasp; strung on nylon line. The three beads on either side next to clasp are carved, the rest are inlaid with circular multi-coloured glass (?) surrounded by black paint and lighter wood. Two black dots vertically placed between each circle. On both sides, two beads (the 12th and 13th from the clasp) are inlaid with two bands of twisted metal wire at each end. The centre three largest beads are also inlaid with wire bands as well as white and green beads and round pieces of shell. These circles alternate with painted black diamonds inlaid with metal crosses and a metal dot in each quarter of the cross. They are also inlaid with white glass beads.

Thin light to dark brown carved box resonator, open at the lower end, and tapering towards tapered metal tongues (keys) held relatively parallel to one another lengthwise on the top by a metal lateral bar, and spaced by short bent metal pieces inserted in wood. Tongues' lower ends upended by lateral bar placed underneath. Carved panel lower end has crossing diagonals and a large flat rounded nut strung on hide knotted through holes on either side widthwise across the panel. Small reddish brown nut-like metal container strung on left with cotton thread. Box opening has lateral metal bar with four loosely wrapped metal bands. Length of knotted fibre strung through two holes at box's upper end.

A fitted rounded dark brown twisted fibre cord and bead cap. One side is thickly woven with a pattern of diagonal rows formed by long loops pressed together to create depth. Side is topped by braided grass(?) band. From this, lengths of fine twisted fibre cord (some broken away) join this side to a thick woven fibre side with beads: cotton(?) cord tied on to weaving brought through to the top and short ends strung with various-sized red beads. Dark blue beads, and white and blue-striped beads strung at cap's top. Rim is length of twisted cord wrapped around circumference.

Cylindrical-shaped headdress with basketry support (triaxil interlacing) and large, flared, upper rim; has entirely beaded surface sewn on cloth-covered support. Horizontal bands of white triangles on black. One wide row of white zig-zag. Two single rows of red beading. Rows of white and black at rim. Small opening at basket top stuffed and covered by cloth which is wrapped into stiff support for hollow, beaded cone, inverted, projecting from top, with stiff black hair wisk, hide wrapped and sewn on wood stick projecting up from cone's centre. Wisk's base, wire wrapped. Cone's flared rim has four beaded straps, two with black and white stripes, the others with white triangle pattern and red beaded edge, attaching cone with flared top rim of cylinder. Two attached, looped, beaded straps, one at each side at ear area, one in black and white, the other in red and white. One has dangling bead string. One base side has short, bead-wrapped cloth projection.

Bow made from a cylindrical section of wood, arched and tapering to ends that are wrapped in hide thong. With the exception of an area at the centre that is flanked by some thong lashing, the rest of the length is covered by tightly coiled in wire covered with a blackened coating. The bow string, lashed over the hide at the ends, is three-ply cord made of twisted hide thongs.
