Wayang kulit (shadow puppet) Gunungan (mountain) or kayon (tree of life). Leaf-shaped filigree-cut leather object tied between stick split lengthwise with 3 carved bands at base and tapering handle. Base of leaf tapers out and into point at top. Light blue pedestal design at base, ends curled up; topped by upturned row of floral motifs. Oval enclosures in centre flanked by 2 large curved wings. Tree trunk grows from oval supporting rosettes, symmetrical sets of branches with 4 monkeys. Six birds in various positions between. All colours pale. Number on base (29-1919 ?) and inscription 'Bakoendean'.

A complete hide is used to form a long rectangular bag. The top of the neck is laced with a brown hide strip which hangs loose. The four legs are drawn together over the stomach and tied to form a carrying handle. The bag remains open at the posterior end.

Rod PuppetIb328 a-c

Three-dimensional male humanoid puppet: large head (part b) fits into body with skirt (part a), and a control rod (part c) with a long shaft that passes through the body and fits into the neck of the figure's head. The body has jointed arms, each with a long controlling rod attached. Face pale pink, mouth closed, thin red lips, small black moustache, almond shaped narrow eyes, thin and sharply pointed nose. Wearing turban with peak in front, in pale green, red, blue, and beige trim. Two slots on either side of turban at back. Wears cotton red skirt, long red sleeves, black cotton red skirt, black cotton tunic extending into apron. Decorated with coloured sequins, gold braid and fringe. Upper arms braided. Lower arms wood with hands at right angles to arms. Left arm has carved green bracelet. Hole in palm but no controlling stick attached. Right hand has hole in palm with string attaching stick. Head can be moved through 360 degrees.

Puppet depicting a stylized, flat male figure with long handle that has a pointed metal tip at end. Parchment arms attached on either side of shoulder by string with control stick attached to one hand. Figure in three-quarter view. Songkok with red and gold cap shows traces of green, white, red and gold paint. Eyes round, long curling lips, moustache and small beard. Two rows of small teeth. Clothed in close-fitting long-sleeved jacket with carved ruffled edge and traces of red and yellow paint. Blue paint on apron. Sarong patterned with white in checkered motif, traces of red and green, with 1.6 cm border along bottom and front showing traces of blue and gold paint. Three-fingered gold hands held with wrists flexed. Legs are gold, held close together. Clog-like shoes with remains of red paint.

The body has jointed arms, each with a long controlling rod attached. Face dark pink, with gold ears and neck. Hair, sideburns, beard, moustache, and eyebrows black. Red irises. White upper teeth and fangs. Prominent upper lip and nose. Wearing white hat, gold and red trim, peaked brim. Cylindrical body shape ending below waist. Wearing cotton long-sleeved black tunic, red collar and suspenders, yellow belt, flowered yoke inset with off-white strip down front. Cotton one-piece skirt open in back, patterned brown, yellow, and black. Arms in two pieces jointed at elbow. Hands open. Holes in palms through which string passes attaching sticks.

The body has jointed arms, each with a long controlling rod attached. Pink face, black bushy eyebrows over an upward turned long nose. Open mouth showing white teeth and a single fang extending from each corner of the upper jaw; evident overbite. Black painted goatee on chin. Cap-like crown with six points: includes jamang, sumping and fringe of hair with one kendit. Crown is painted gold and red and has a Garuda Mungkur. Upper body and arms unclothed. Some chipped paint on chest. Two arms; jointed at elbow and shoulder with string and attached at each hand to a controlling wand. Ornaments on upper arm, hands face upwards. Wand is missing from the puppet's right arm. Batiked skirt in yellow with brown checkered pattern with a brown diamond at each joint.
