Tile3401/12

Square ceramic tile with floral and geometric motifs painted on front. Surface and sides are glazed. Background is dark brown. Triangle outlines, with plums(?) painted inside of them, in the tile corners. Triangle outlines connect to a white hexagon outline, in the centre of the tile, with diagonal lines. Designs of peaches and plums, surrounded by light and dark green leaves, inside of hexagon. In the space between the hexagon outline and the edges of the tile are depictions of light purple and pink plum blossoms with white leaves. Raised grid across entire back of tile. Inscriptions, handwritten and stamped, on back.

Tile3401/24

Square ceramic tile with floral and geometric motifs painted on front. Surface and sides are glazed. Tile background is off-white. Black border of two lines, one thicker than the other, along all sides. Lines intersect at the corners. Central design of a black diamond with white leaves inside of it. In middle of diamond is a round periwinkle blue flower, with a yellow centre. Four dark brown branches extend from flower, outside of the diamond. Branches point towards tile corners. Small periwinkle blue flowers at the ends of the branches, with offshoots of dark and light green leaves on either side. Small circle and larger circular outline imprinted on back of tile. Inscription on back with manufacturer's name, T & R Boote.

Square ceramic tile painted black with light grey-blue designs overtop. Surface is glazed, sides partially glazed. Border on all sides with rectangles inside of it. Rectangles filled with diagonal lines. Small squares at the tile corners, inside of the border, with crosses in their middles. Central design of a sandpiper, standing on one leg, surrounded by reeds. Raised grid across entire back of tile. Manufacturer’s mark, Minton Hollins & Co., stamped inside grid, with each letter in its own square.

Square ceramic tile painted white with blue designs overtop. All sides are glazed. Central design of a man and a woman in a field, under a cloudy sky, with trees in the background. The male figure is standing, holding a staff in his left hand and a bunch of grass(?) in his right. He is wearing a wide-brimmed hat, necktie and long coat. The woman is sitting on the ground, pointing at the man with her right hand and holding a bunch of grass(?) in her left. She is wearing a wide-brimmed hat with a ribbon around it, a short-sleeved white over dress and dark blue long-sleeved under dress. “June” is painted in the bottom right hand corner. Seven horizontal ridges on back of tile. Inscriptions on back.

Square ceramic tile with scene painted on front. Surface, sides and parts of bottom are glazed. Central design of three figures in a wooded area, done in light grey, inside of a blue circle. Two figures are on horseback, a man and woman, and a second man is lying on the ground. The reclining man is in the foreground, with a sword and shield in front of him. The tile designer's name is written on the shield. The man on horseback is wearing a crown, pointing towards the left side of the tile. All are well dressed. The blue circle the figures are inside is outlined in light grey-green and black. Edges of tile outlined in black. Stylized knots, done in light grey-green, in the four corners of the tile. Top and bottom sides of tile decorated with blue lines. Diagonal ridges on back of tile. Manufacturer’s mark, Minton China Works, stamped in between ridges.
