In the Spirit of the Ancestors-Robes like this are known as nobility blankets because they were worn by high-ranking Salish families who had the wealth to commission them. Sisters Debra and Robyn Sparrow have been leaders of the revival of Musqueam weaving. In the course of weaving this robe, the Musqueam community and the Sparrow family suffered a number of deaths, leading Debra and Robyn to call it a mourning blanket.
Small rounded basket (part a) with a lid (part b). The basket (part a) bulges around the middle. Has plain twined weaving with crossed warp open-work twined weaving ("eye-hole") and twined and wicker weave at the top. Overlaid twined weaving (false embroidery) is on the cover (part b) and the basket (part a). Black twined weave areas around the middle of the basket (part a) has six upward pointing black triangles in a horizontal row in false embroidery, which (Emmons' Tlingit Basketry, p. 270, calls "half of head of salmon-berry"), while the lid (part b) has five downward pointing black triangles. Construction of the cover (part b) is very intricate.
Circular spruce root basket (a) with a flat bottom and a fitted lid (b); plain twined weaving. Design has completely faded on outside. Base - one band (five rows wide) with every other warp strand in purple. Sides - central band; every other warp strand is purple for eight warp strands then every other stitch (staggered) is purple for eight warp strands. Gives the effect of two staggered rows of alternating squares of checks and stripes. Lid has same design as base.
Small, square swamp grass basket (a) with flat, fitted lid (b); lid features a central button type handle. Basket and lid are decorated with multicoloured, encircling bands of linear patterning in red, green, yellow and purple. Base: checker work. Sides: wrapped twined weave with folded warp border (lid done in four sections).
Small, roughly cylindrical spruce root basket (a) with lightly flaring sides and a flat, fitted lid (b). Designs consist of three bands with central band in green, purple and natural (open rhomboid design). Wrapped twined weaving.
