Rod PuppetIb335 a-c

Three-dimensional male humanoid puppet: large head (part b) fits into body with skirt (part a), and a control rod (part c) with a long shaft that passes through the body and fits into the neck of the figure's head. The body has jointed arms, each with a long controlling rod attached. Head: forward gazing white face, black eyes, red lips, gold teeth, black moustache, sideburns and hair. Headdress: jamang-blue points outlined in red; gold, red and blue bands across bottom, blue and gold sumping. Garuda Mungkur mostly gold with blue and red trim, black line mouth, gold and red eye, red tongue. Clothing: dark blue tutupan, gold pattern on cuff, white breast piece, blue swatches over each breast held by three gold beads on right and two broken beads on left. Red cloth at throat, epaulettes in orange, red and blue. Two waistbands; top is green and black check with gold and black bands at bottom, lower waistband has floral design in blue, yellow, red and white. The figure is also wearing a light orange, off-white, dark orange and blue batik sarong. The hands are flat.

The body has jointed arms, each with a long controlling rod attached. The figure has a light red face, blunt nose, large red eyes, red lips, and a brown human hair moustache attached to face with four bent nails. Wrinkles are rendered in black, and the figure's black hair is tied back with a white band. Clothing: blue tutupan attached with two nails, and a red, green and yellow sarong.

Headdress: cap, red star on white with red and gold bands at rim. Gold band appears to have a layer of green paint under it. Body: distended belly, rope protruding from neck. Clothing: light blue tutupan with green and black striped sleeves, red under-tunic, dark blue, natural and light brown batik sarong. Hands attached with cord to control rods. Puppet held by rod running through body and head.

BasketIb429

The basket is woven from natural coloured fibres in an open weave design. The rim is circular, but the basket sides slant inwards as the weaving ends in square corners and the base is made from two pieces of wood slotted together to form an 'X'. Bamboo branches run from the base to the rim on both the inside and outside of the basket. The outside branches are nailed to the inside branches. There are two loops on the outside of two of the branches at about the middle of the basket.

Closely woven rattan with four pieces of bamboo on sides and two pieces of plywood crisscrossed on bottom for support. Two rattan handles are attached to bamboo frames on same side of basket. A strip of bamboo circles the top. The pieces of bamboo frame are nailed into the rattan. Basket is wide at top tapering to a narrow bottom.

Skirt made with pieces of cotton fabric with raw edges joined by a two central embroidered strips to form a rectangular tube. The detailing consists of a vertical pattern of two narrow, white, parallel pinstripes on a navy ground. The central embroidered hand sewn strips run horizontally and vertically making a cross-like pattern. It is in repeating colours of red, orange, purple, blue and white.

Skirt made with four pieces cotton fabric with selvedge edges joined by central embroidery to form a long rectangular shaped tube. The detailing consists of a three fine white vertical double pinstripes woven in at wide intervals on a dark blue ground. One stripe goes the whole length, one is discontinuous and one stripe goes half way down the length of the skirt. There is a darn near the discontinuous white pinstripe and one of the selvages.
