Waist BagN3.37

A small flat bag made of dark blue silk damask with an overall pattern of lozenges and small circles. At the top, the blue silk is folded inside where it is sewn with an invisible seam to the white cotton lining. Main body of the bag is shaped like a vertical rectangle with triangular projections on both sides created by folding and holding the folds in place with a circular pink cylindrical cord. The cord ends at the front with elaborate knots, culminating in five loops. Fastened to the three centre loops, there are stuffed triangles, one each of pink, yellow, and light green silk. Attached to the lower edge of each triangle, there are three, four, and five tabs, respectively, of silk fabric in various colours. Each triangle is embroidered with floral motifs and each has pompoms on the side points. The tabs fastening the top point of the yellow and pink triangles to the cord are wrapped in strips of silver and gold paper, respectively.

Waist BagN3.36

A small flat bag made of light blue-green and burgundy silk damask embroidered on both sides. At the top, the light blue-green fabric is joined to a red silk lining with an invisible seam held flat by groups of very fine stitches. Main body of the bag is shaped like a vertical rectangle with triangular projections on both sides created by folding and holding the folds in place with a pink cylindrical cord. The lower edge and the triangular projections at the sides of the bag are made of the burgundy silk which has been appliquéd onto the other fabric. Many motifs are embroidered onto the bag, all of which are heavily outlined in bright gold couching, sometimes with double threads. Motifs include stylized waves and rocks on the burgundy part with a swastika on each side at the bottom centre. On the pale blue-green part, there is a stylized Chinese ? character on each side at the top, below which, there is a fungus-like shape on the back. On the front, there is a stylized Chinese ? character, below which, there are two fungus-like shapes. Below this, there are two Chinese ? characters and a fungus-like design coming out of a rainbow-patterned circular form. The pink cord is worked into an elaborate knot ending in four loops and two knotted ends at the front and is knotted forming double loops on the back.

Quilted Socks1553/10 a-b

Pair of baby’s socks (part a-b) made of white fabric, finely quilted in narrow parallel rows. The rows on the foot are vertical; those on the front of the ankle are diagonal. Socks are flat, with a seam around outer edge. The two layers are joined with an invisible stitching seam at the top. They are embroidered with floral motifs in blue-green and dark pink and four lozenges in dark pink and green. There is a dark pink tassel on the toe and a long white tie attached at the back of the ankle.

Waist BagN3.34

A small round bag made of red silk damask lined with white cotton fabric. Top of the bag is closed with pleating threaded onto two red cords joined at the ends with elaborate red, and gold knots and four tassels, two at each end. Two tassels are light green and pink while the other two are dark blue and yellow. All tassels are wrapped with gold thread at the top. Each tassel thread ends in a tiny circle. The upper edge of the bag is folder under to join the white cotton lining with an invisible seam. There are embroidered designs, some with gold couching, on both surfaces of the bag. On one side, there are four Korean? characters in different colours, below which, there are floral images. Below them, at the centre, there are two birds facing each other on a rainbow pattern. The other side of the bag is embroidered with pink and yellow flowers on green stems.

Shoes984/12 a-b

Pair of man’s funeral shoes made of fine white leather. The sides are low, but there is an upward extension at the heel, which has a centre seam covered with five vertical cotton strings. Section covering toes is very short; the main body of each shoe is open. There is narrow piping finishing the vertical seam at the front of the toe section, and wider piping around the upper edge of the shoes. The soles are made of layers of natural brown leather slightly thicker at the toe and heel ends, and have numerous iron cleats at the front and heel. The soles are attached to the body of the shoes with a row of stitching around the edge of the soles, and there is a row of heavy, even stitches around the edge of the white leather. The shoes are lined with white leather, and have insoles of woven grey wool fabric.

Shoes984/11 a-b

Pair of light brown open-work shoes woven of straw. Soles are weft-faced, woven in four rows across the shoes with a decorative band under the arch consisting of two rows of shiny lighter-coloured material with a purple row between them. The heels are raised to a point ending in a single vertical element attached to a band extending around from the heel to the sides, where it is attached to a vertical element on each sides. The heel piece and band are wrapped in smooth, shiny plant fibre. The sides from the midpoint to the front consist of vertical twined strings wrapped in a dull brown material, all attached to the sole and to a band at the top which is wrapped in narrower strips of the same shiny yellow plant material. There is an opening at the centre front.

One of a pair of embroidered panels on a horizontal rectangle of dark pink silk with a backing of yellow paper that is folded towards the front and pasted in place to form a frame. Each panel is finely embroidered with an arch shape open at the top made up of flowers, leaves, and four multi-coloured butterflies, one of which is near the bottom while the other is near the top of the side of the arch shape. One butterfly is in profile and the other with wings spread. The flowers are predominantly in shades of blue and green. Some details are couched in gold thread. Within the arch are four wide v-shapes of embroidered flowers and leaves opening toward the centre of the panel.

Long coat with both the outer layer and lining made of fine white cotton fabric. The coat is made of ten flared vertical panels. It overlaps to the right, with two long, wide ribbons of the same fabric for ties. The coat is secured on the inside with shorter, narrow ties of the same material, positioned at the same level. When closed, the overlap forms a V neck edged with a stiff collar covered with shiny white fabric patterned with characters. The ribbon ties are centred at the lower ends of inner and outer facings with rounded edges. The sleeves are attached with a vertical seam somewhat beyond the shoulder and have a lower seam shaped in a convex curve, narrowing to the wrist. There is a small underarm reinforcement on each side, with an additional rectangular reinforcement or repair in the left underarm. At waist level there are openings at each side. All seams are concealed.

Underwear984/4

Under-trousers of unbleached heavy white cotton fabric. The underwear has a wide cotton waistband. There is an opening on the right side, closed by wide ties. The wide pant legs are pleated into the waistband; the three pleats on each side face the centre seam, front and back. A triangular panel is inserted between the legs, ending below the knees. The panel is lined with the same cotton fabric, which extends into adjacent areas of the pant legs. The rest of the underwear is unlined.
