Bone from Level Bag12/14/1987

Mammal bone fragments found in bag labeled "35-WL-4/B2, Cat# PV23, Bone frags collected from cut bank - varying depths. 10/20/55 GLC" According to Guy Marden (see p. 11 of his Draft report of Native American Indian Burials from the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, copy received at Burke 1995), "although these bone fragments do not appear to be human, I could not make a determination. The tooth does not appear to be human." We agree that the bones are not human. 07/21/1995, K. Smith. These bones were separated from the collections to verify that they were not human. Stephanie Jolivette, UW Archaeology Graduate Student, examined them on 6/22/2010 and confirmed that they were not human. Because they were separated from the collection, they were not identified at the time of the transfer to the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest in 2009. M. Noble 6/22/2010. This material will need to be deaccessioned and transferred to the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. M. Hotz 7/13/2010

Bone from Level Bag45SJ280/LB209

This bag was labeled "3S, 0E" with no other identifying factors. Research in R. Schalk and F. Bell's fieldnotes suggest that this dog skull was found in the same level and unit quadrant as the human remains cataloged as " Burial 4" , E. Shirbroun, 11/14/2003 The dog skull was found at a depth of 133/137cm, however Schalk and Bell's notes do not indicate the skull is related to the burial. The burial was only slightly in the unit and surrounded by a circle of 6 rocks. The dog skull was south of this circle. There is not mention of bag 209 in the notebooks. "3S, 0E" was a marker on the edge of the unit. J. Milhausen 8/6/2009 45SJ280/LB110 is a level bag from this same unit "3S, 0E" that has been designated as associated funerary objects because human remains were removed from it. The original level bag list stops at LB208 so it appears that this number was assigned at the Burke. This does not appear to be a true level bag, rather an bag containing dog remains and sediment. It does not appear to have a connection to burial 4 based on its provenance. M. Noble 08/07/2009

Bone from Level Bag45SJ185/15

One complete bird long bone. Found in a paper bag labelled "murre SJ185" in pencil. The artifacts in this level bag are assumed to be associated with the Burroughs 1949 excavation, based on the site designations on the bag, as well as the date of the excavation. Many similar level bags were found in the Archaeology Lab in 1997-1998. There is no level bag list in the documents (see Burke Archives) from Burroughs' excavation, and the level bags were not numbered. As a result, we have assigned each level bag a number based on the site number. L.Phillips, 4/28/98
