Grey-brown double spout bottle, with bridge handle and rounded base. Head design with two pierced circle vents in blind spout, serrated collar, trapezoidal pectoral with red-brown border and 12 reed stamp circles. Partially polished surface. Modelled and molded manufacture. Breakage repaired.

Bottle2990/320

Root marked, grey-brown, double spout bottle. Falcon head decoration in blind spout. Nine reed stamp circles on breast. Tail decorated with a horizontal “eye of god" motif, a diagonal step panel and band of plumage motif. Traces of red-brown, white and yellow-brown paint. Partially polished surface. Broken and repaired.

Gourd Bottle3154/9 a-b

Gourd incense container. Undecorated gourd is round and squat, dark orange in colour, with a woven cord looped several times around the neck and secured by knots incorporating a small ivory ring. Cord is held in place by black threads that cross on the container’s bottom and are tied around the cord in four places. A second cord is looped around the first on the container’s shoulder and is fitted through a ring in the ivory stopper which closes the container at top. Cord is then tied around a large ivory ring with Japanese characters inscribed on both sides and filled with a dark pigment. Part b is a carrying bag in dark purple silk with a tan coloured floral motif on front and drawstring closure.

Gourd Bottle3154/8 a-c

Gourd bottle with cover. Undecorated drinking gourd for carrying sake is tall, bulbous on bottom, elongated on upper portion, with a rounded lip surrounding the mouth at top. Patina is a dark orange with a high shine. A lighter orange cord is wrapped several times around the waist of the vessel, with trailing end holding a small, yellow wooden stopper by its loop. Part b is a silk carrying bag, rounded at bottom, dark purple on the outside, and black on the interior. A purple-brown drawstring closes the bag at neck. Part c is a small wooden tile with a fine orange cord attached through a hole at top. On one side are Japanese characters written in ink, and on the other is a small pencil drawing of the gourd.

Gourd bottle with cover. Drinking gourd for carrying sake is tall, bulbous on bottom and elongated on top with a neck curving slightly off centre. A small wooden stopper fits inside the mouth. Vessel's patina is a dark orange with a high shine. A light green cord is wrapped three times around the neck of the gourd, with trailing end holding the stopper through a ring in its top, and continuing on to wrap around a large wooden ring. Part b is a square of silk cloth with a pattern of oak leaves in green and grey on a cream background. Cloth is lined with undecorated cream silk.

Gourd bottle with cover. Undecorated drinking gourd for carrying sake is oblong, bulbous on top and bottom, with a small, short neck. Object has an even, dark orange patina. A dark purple cotton cord is wrapped three times around the waist of the gourd and then trails, holding the small wooden stopper (part b) by being inserted through a hole bored at centre. Part c is a small wooden tile with an orange thread tied through a hole at top, a Japanese character drawn in ink on one side of the tile and a pencil drawing of the gourd on the other. Part d is a silk carrying bag, rounded at bottom, light tan in colour, with a purple drawstring at neck.

Gourd Bottle3154/6 a-c

Gourd bottle with net and cover. Undecorated drinking gourd for carrying sake is tall, bulbous on bottom, narrowing toward mouth which is capped with a short wooden stopper shaped like a tree. Stopper has three Japanese characters scratched into the base. A woven carrying net (part b) loosely surrounds the gourd, with base woven into a star pattern. The neck of the net is made of a cord that loops through the stopper and creates a handle for the gourd to be carried by. Part c is a grey-green textured silk bag into which fits the gourd. It has a tan drawstring at neck.

Gourd bottle with box. Undecorated drinking gourd for carrying sake is tall, bulbous on top and bottom, with a rounded lip surrounding the mouth at top. Surface is dark orange with a high shine. A lighter orange cord is wrapped and knotted around the waist of the vessel, with trailing end holding a small, dark wooden stopper by its loop. Parts b and c are a wooden box and lid that the gourd is carried in. A green ribbon is attached to the box, meant to tie the lid in place. The lid has writing in Japanese characters in black ink on both sides.

Gourd bottle with cotton net bag. Undecorated drinking gourd for carrying sake is wide and bulbous on bottom, narrowing toward top through decreasingly smaller midsection and neck bulbs. A wooden stopper is inserted into the mouth at top, and is carved in a two-ring design through which a woven dark purple cord is threaded. Cord is woven into the neck of an openly constructed net bag that completely encloses the gourd.
