Gourd Bottle3154/2 a-b

Gourd bottle with cover. Undecorated drinking gourd for carrying sake is tall, bulbous on bottom, round and elongated on top, capped with a metal neck and stopper. Surface is dark orange. A lighter orange cord is wrapped three times around the waist of the vessel, holding a green stone ring, then passing through a metal loop on the stopper, and finally through a round wooden bead. Part b is a silk carrying bag, rounded at bottom, dark blue with light grey foliage on the outside, and bright red and green on the interior. A brown drawstring closes the bag at neck.

Gourd Bottle3154/1 a-e

Gourd bottle with box. Gourd is tall, bulbous on top and bottom, with a small bulb emerging from side at top. A stopper (part b) has been carved like a duck bill and fits horizontally into the hole in the bulb. Vessel's patina is a dark orange with a high shine. A lighter orange cord is wrapped several times around the neck of the gourd, with trailing end holding a dark brown wooden hoop. Gourd is filled with small metal balls. Part c is a dark purple and green silk carrying bag with an orange drawstring cord. Parts d and e are the bottom and lid of a light tan wooden carrying box with Japanese characters written in ink directly on the lid top, and on an adhered slip of paper on the underside.

Geometrical and incised decoration: red-brown "L" design with four horizontal lines at right and one vertical line on other side. d) Small fragment of decorated area. Geometrical and incised decoration: red-brown vertical band with four horizontal lines at right and one vertical line on the other side. e) Two undecorated and small fragments. Probably part of base.

Compressed ovoid bottle with rounded base and short spout. Incised neck ring with a “Z” twined fret motif and dots in the interior; double band above. Traces of red and cream pigment. Bottle2990/718 a-d

Grey-brown bottle with conical spout, connected to a feline head by a strap handle. Four reed stamp circles on breast, two horizontal “eye of god” motifs on tail with geometric meander below. Banded legs to the sides extend to the gambrel. Spaces between wings and tail filled with chevron bands with a triangular foot at the centre. The feline mask extends back from wings along gambrel. Traces of red and white pigments. Mold-made ceramic; burnished surface. Broken and partially repaired. Part b) Side part of bottle with geometrical and incised lines near one of the edges. Traces of red pigment. c) Side part of top of the bottle with geometrical decoration and traces of red paint. d) Undecorated fragment.

Feline design has dotted rectangles on rear paws, dotted circles in brow divided by elaborate whisker element. "Eye of god" designs, diagonal whiskers and dotted circles below mouth. Front legs with paws to sides. Traces of red pigment. Burnished surface. Broken and partly repaired. a) Part of side and base. Incised diagonals lines and two reed stamp circles near base.
