Seal Bowl3259/16

Unpainted dish or bowl in the form of a seal, carved from a single piece of wood. Wood is reddish-brown; the details of the seal are incised. The head extends at one end, with mouth closed; the flippers and tail at the other end. Along the side of the bowl, the flippers are held against the body. Artist name written on base.

Round, wide-mouthed bowl. Bowl flares slightly out from the rim and narrows sharply at the halfway point toward a small round base. The outside surface is a light cream colour, covered in a finely etched pattern outlined with blue and red linear figures. Both the top rim and the halfway point of the bowl are ringed with a thick dark brown line. The interior of the bowl is painted brown and the base is painted red. Both inside and outside have a shiny glaze.

Small round bowl with unglazed base. Dark-brown thickly speckled glaze covers most of rim. Inset round base flares upward towards body. Dark-brown linear characters slightly inset into glaze and on opposite sides of body. Interior has a few dark-brown specks on walls and inner shoulder. Green glaze lightens in colour underneath rim.

Small round bowl with unglazed base. Dark-brown speckled glaze around outer rim, less on inner rim. Inset round base flares upward to a wider body. Dark brown characters inset into glaze and on opposite sides of body. Green glaze lightens in colour near rim and in streaks running vertically. Base has two small horizontal lines of dark-brown glaze. Small thinly glazed marks around rim near top of linear character. Interior has dark-brown specks and thin diagonal line on inner shoulder.

Carved seal bowl. Oval shaped opening, seal head projects from one end, rear flippers from other end. Raised line carved around inside of the bowl’s cavity. Carved in low relief on the outside are stylized representations of flippers and joints. A solid carved line defines the seal’s eyelids. Varnish or stain over outer and inner surface, except on base.

Dark brown grease bowl carved in the shape of a bird. The bird's head and tail extend beyond the oval bowl, at either end. There is a small frog carved in the beak of the bird at the very front. A bird face is carved on the top of the tail and design elements are carved along the sides.

Bentwood Bowl3260/46

Large bentwood bowl, or dish. Wrapped around the four sides are painted images of killer whales, their heads meeting at the front, their tails at the back. Human-like faces appear in the whales’ blowholes and above the heads; a face with an upturned mouth and two ears looks out above the tail flukes, its clawed hands/paws on either side, and slender legs extending around to either side of the bowl. Dark red border around upper edge. Yellow cedar sides, red cedar base.
