Pipe Bowl Fragment, Clay1989-57/16-19

Clay trade pipe bowl fragment with a blackened interior from smoking; there is still soot present. The exterior is grayish white in color with a star motif that appears to be in the shape of a figure 8. Within the lower portion of the figure 8 star motif are the letters T and D. The star motif continues upwards, but one cannot see the complete design because of the fragmentary nature of the pipe bowl. There is a seam running between the T and the D on the pipe bowl. There is a feathered design present on the underside of the pipe bowl.

Pipe Bowl Fragment, Ground Stone2869

Portion of a stone pipe.* Fide donor GTE: Portion of bowl of an old tubular steatite pipe. Dug up near Lytton. Pipes are in general use. The oldest type was evidently tubular, but those of a later period, and those used today, are of the ordinary type of bowl and stem. They are made of a steatite or some transparent soapstone, which in some the fire can be seen through the wall of the bowl. The stem is often ornamented with lead inlaid which in some cases is used to strengthen the stem as the material is brittle. A plain hollow wood stem is used. *Information is from the original accession ledger.
