BUILT BY WILLIAM TENNISCO OF THE GOLDEN LAKE BAND OF ALGONQUIN INDIANS, CALABOGIE, ONTARIO, CANADA IN 1940. THIS CANOE IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, USED BY OWNER ON ADIRONDACK LAKE PISECO, NEW YORK, IN 1984. CEDAR PLANKS COVERED WITH BIRCH BARK, SEALED WITH SOME TYPE OF PITCH, 3 1/4" RIB ON 4" CENTER. THREE CROSS BRACES WITH LEATHER LACES COVERED WITH PITCH. ALL SEAMS OVERLAPPED ABOUT 2" ALSO SEALED WITH PITCH.
FROM CARD: "BIRCH-BARK OVER LIGHT WOODEN FRAME; FALSE GUNWALES COVERED WITH FIGURED DESIGN. ROUND BOTTOM; ENDS ALIKE, SHARP, AND CLOSED ON TOP FOR 3 1/4 INCHES AT EACH END; RECURVED SHEER; 2 PADDLES. LENGTH 24"; BEAM 4 1/2"; HEIGHT, AMIDSHIPS, 2 1/2"; ENDS, 4 1/2"; PADDLES, 7 1/2". 2 HUMAN FIGURES, 1 SPEAR, AND 1 TORCH MADE AT MUSEUM FOR PURPOSE OF DEMONSTRATING "FISHING BY TORCHLIGHT", IN OLD HEATING-AND-LIGHTING EXHIBIT. TREATED AT CONSERVATION AND RETURNED 10/10/72 JRR."
From card: "Has porcupine quill embroidery decoration on either side and at ends."Written on the artifact itself in old handwriting: "Chicoutimi, Chateau Saguenay, made by Montagnais Indians"; there also appears to be a price marked of "25." Chicoutimi is a town name, which is now part of Saguenay, Quebec. Chateau Saguenay was the name of a tourist hotel, built in 1898.
Painted model canoe. The body of the canoe is wide in the centre line, narrowing toward both the bow and stern, where it rises high above the deck. The keep is pronounced, the bottom of the boat very slightly rounded. The outer hull is painted with black formline images from gunwales to keel, while the interior and base are undecorated. Lacquer covers the exterior.
