« A doll is made from strips of tanned moose skin stuffed with moss or grass and stitched together with thread. Features are indicated with dark red cotton thread. A hat and dress are made of red wool felt, and strips of blue tape are sewn around the arms and waist. Short lengths of blue and clear seed beads are sewn on the hat. A length of clear beads circles the waist. Short lengths of blue and clear beads strung on purple thread (fig. 32g) are attached to the waist. » Vanstone, James W. Doll figure is made of a cotton under- form, covered at bottom by a red and blue skirt with encircling rows of white beads. Torso and neck are wrapped with a twisted cord of undyed plant fibre, and its head of brown cotton perched at top. Hair made of twisted fibre hangs to below chin, eyes are made of white and orange beads; a line of white beads runs from forehead to chin. A vest of animal hair wraps around the doll’s shoulders and chest, and canvas arms emerge from sides. Bracelets of multi-coloured beads hang from elbows and wrists, and fingers are made of the same. Doll holds a hair whisk in one hand.

Fabric doll. Doll is made of brown polyester, dressed in a suit of dark green cotton with a red belt. Large pockets decorate the front, and a matching green bag is slung over the right shoulder. A silver chain drapes from right shoulder to left hip. Facial features are stitched thread, with a red mouth and white and black eyes. Over the black hair is a Basotho style hat, made of thick woven plant fibre. The hat comes to a point at top, where there is a loop.

Female doll carved from wood, with arms articulated at the shoulders, and legs at the hips. Head is large, with carved facial features and ears, eyes and cheeks emphasized with paint. She wears a long brown cotton dress covered by a green and blue apron, with a knit brown and red shawl around her shoulders. A large metal pendant hangs from the tied closure of the shawl at her neck. Meal earrings are attached through holes in her lobes, and around her head is a metal link band decorated at front with a fabric bow. Wispy brown hair is attached to a black cap covering her head.

Male doll wearing brown wool pants with gold and green panels at back, a heavy dark blue wool sweater, a rectangular multicoloured textile in shades of red and green at the shoulders, and a light coloured bandana tied around his neck. His hat fits close to the head, with the brim flipped up in front to show a zigzag ribbon decoration and small pompoms. At crown is a tuft of metallic thread atop further ribbon and flat pompom decorations. Long decorative flaps trail down his back to the waist, brightly embroidered with figures, diamond shapes, and sequins stars, on a light cream background. A wide leather belt or pouch decorated with studs is buckled around the waist. He holds a wooden drumstick in his right hand. His shoes are small wood and leather sandals. His face is painted, showing large brown eyes, rosy cheeks, a red mouth and a dark moustache.

Knit doll. Doll's neck and head are a knit light tan tube, stuffed, with a blue hat atop long brown braids. Eyes, nose and mouth are embroidered in yarn. Dress is knit in horizontal lines of pattern in zigzag and 'x' motifs, with green scalloping at wrists and hem. At the waist are sewn two small child dolls, male and female, both wearing hats, the girl in a dress similar to her mothers, the boy in pants and a sweater. All three wear orange shoes, and have a Peruvian coin sewn to the stomach of their clothing.

Wool and plant fibre doll. A small boat is constructed of unbleached fabric layered over a stiff framework, likely plant fibre or husk. Fine brown netting is wrapped around the ends of the boat and spans the length of one side between them. Three woolen figures sit inside the structure, each with a large head covered at back by a woven hood, red stitching for facial features, and arms constructed of plant fibre wrapped with yarn. Each wears a striped woven sweater and a burlap skirt.

Doll wearing an amautik parka, carrying a child. Female doll has eyes embroidered in black thread and mouth in red, with a slightly protruding nose. Hair of wool is sewn onto the head with ends braided in ponytails. Amautik parka is made from canvas, with embroidered decoration along hem and wrists, and a blue and red belt tied at waist. A light cotton robe with decoration similar to the parka is slung through the belt at back. Doll wears a pink and white gingham skirt over a lace underskirt. Boots are leather, topped with a felt cuff and fur trim. The knit figure of an infant (part b) wrapped in a pink and blue blanket, its facial features embroidered in black thread, rides in a hood pouch attached to the mother’s parka at the neck.

Doll wearing an amautik parka. Female doll has a head and face carved from antler, with inset eyes and mouth, and wide, slightly protruding nose. Black wool is attached to head for hair with a long ponytail at back. Doll’s parka and pants are made from half-tanned leather. Jacket has an amaut pouch attached at back for carrying a small child. Jacket shoulders have a fringe of beading, and beads are also attached at wrists, on amaut, and along hem front and back just above a short dense leather fringe. Pants are beaded at bottom, and end just above leather boots that have a heavy covering of fur.
