From card: "9/28/66 Examination of accession records indicate that this specimen was associated with a 'shaman' grave examined by McLean near Sitka." From 19th or early 20th century exhibit label with the card: "Hand drum of the Tlinkit Indians ... Shell, a hoop of wood; head, of skin, soaked, stretched across the hoop, nailed to the back, having on the inside the figure of a bear in red and black. Thongs cross the hoop on the inside. Diameter, 24 3/4 inches. Collected, 1884, by John J. McLean."

WHEN GREEN IT IS STRETCHED ACROSS AND OVER THE HOOP AND FASTENED TO BACK EDGE WITH WOODEN PIN, EXCEPT IN THREE PLACES WHERE THE SKIN WAS NOT LARGE ENOUGH IT IS PEGGED ON OUTSIDE OF HOOP. TWO PAIRS OF HOLES OF THE PAIRS ABOUT 9 INCHES APART ARE MADE THROUGH HOOP AND SKIN 1-1/4 INCHES FROM BACK EDGE AND TWO RAWHIDE THONGS ARE STRETCHED ACROSS BACK OF HOOP SO AS TO CROSS AT THE MIDDLE. A ROPE OF HEMP IS WOUND LENGTHWISE OF THE CROSSING TO FORM A HANDLE."Ruth Demmert, Alan Zuboff, and Linda Wynne made the following comments during the Tlingit Recovering Voices Community Research Visit, March 13-March 24, 2017. This drum is a Tlingit design and is made with bentwood and deer hide.

From card: "Presented by Ellsworth [a.k.a. Ellswarsh], a chief. See U.S.N.M. Report 1888, p. 446, pl. 29. A rectangular box open at top. When used as a drum it is held on one corner, the open top towards the drummer and its sides beaten. The sides and ends are one piece of wood. Three triangular grooves are cut across the piece at the inside where the corners are to come the wood is bent a right angle. What splinters occur are speared off, giving rounded corners on the outside. The sides are painted with their conventional designs of the thunder bird, masks, etc. Used as a drum in their ceremonies." Note re photos: Neg. #s 96-20092 shows side 1, and 96-20093 shows side 2, of this box drum's painted sides.Per the entry on E89186 in the website http://alaska.si.edu/, Ellsworth or Ellswarsh may refer to Daniel Eldjiwus [a.k.a. Daniel Elljuuwas], a chief and builder of the House of Contentment at Skidegate.
