Fan1269/1 a-d

Fan with ivory support pieces attached to white, green and blue peacock feathers. The support pieces are decorated with cut-out geometric designs. Across the entire fan on the white portion of the feathers, are two painted figures (a male and a female). They are surrounded by painted flowers. Part b is the broken off fan frond and part d is its bottom half. Part c is a longer broken fan frond.

A light brown coloured fan woven out of plant fibres. The bottom of the fan curves around to a point at both sides and then curves up to a point at the top. Half of the fan is concave, and the other half of the fan is convex. The design is that of a darker black plant fibre having eight side-by-side rows emanating at a curve from the embedded handle point. The handle is wrapped around with an orange-brown braided plant fibre rope.

The fan has thin black-brown feathers and a decorated handle. The handle is made from a piece of wood doubled over and covered in a thick black substance, possibly resin. Pushed into the black substance are many teardrop-shaped gray seeds.

Round paper fan that inserts into a small semi-circular-shaped wooden piece. Wooden piece extends into a long and narrow stick-like handle and is attached to a long cream coloured fibre cord and green tassel. On one side, the background of the fan is blue and white. Image is of a red figure wearing light-green coloured shorts. Hand of the figure is lifted in the air and is holding a red and blue stick(?). In background, arched over the figure, are alternating red and blue circular geometric designs. On the other side of the fan, there are two figures swinging from ladders on a cream and brown coloured background.

Brown coloured fan with pink coloured tassel attached to metal clasp. When extended, the fan has thirty-one panel pieces each with cut-out floral and vine-like designs on the top three-quarters of the panel. Each panel piece is strung together near the top of the fan by strand of white coloured braided fibre and the bottom portion of panel pieces are secured with a looped metal clasp.

Navy blue fan on light-brown coloured slats. Fan has small Japanese characters down one side of the slats. Blue fan section has a silver coloured metallic diagonal strip to one side that depicts a person, a few painted features, and some Japanese characters. Slats are secured by a thin cord with a green bead tied to its end.

Woven leaf fan with alternating sections of red and gold fringe. There is a band of red leaf material in between the top of the handle and at the bottom of the body of the fan. Between the fringe and the body of the fan is a sewn-on diagonally woven strip with alternating sections that are red and black coloured diamond shapes.

A closing fan made of 29 split bamboo ribs and paper. Painted designs are 7 repeated stylized human figures; white to shoulders, red robes, mitred white hats with large star at top. On each side of figures is a stylized lotus with blue leaves, on a yellow background. Border of white with pink and blue broken ribbons along top and bottom of paper. Two lanterns.

Fan made of woven palm sheath in diagonal checker weave, each strip about 1.5 cm. wide. Fan woven in one piece with cylindrical handle which is covered with thin palm leaf(?), also woven. Body of fan shaped like inverted triangle. Band of weaving 11 cm. wide at top in which strips are 1/2 width, partially woven in open pattern, with zigzag edge at top.

Plain weave palm fibre tear-drop shaped fan with handle wrapped in purple and pink yarn. Plaited edging sewn on with running stitch. Pink yarn in a loose crossing pattern over plaited edging. Horizontal rows of orange and black yarn across fan, design from top: three orange ovals, five black ovals, five orange squares, six black squares, five orange squares, and five black ovals. Twisted blue, purple and yellow cord from base of handle has an attached tassel of blue, green, red, and white.
