Decorated Gourd3361/1

Gourd decorated with elaborate carved designs. Sides divided into two panels with similar imagery, separated by X-like designs with fern leaves within. The panels each feature musicians, standing to the left with their instruments, and pairs of dancers on the right. Buildings, trees, and deer fill the background. The top is carved with geometric designs including a bold ten-point star. The base is a solid uncarved orange with a single circle.

Small container with lid, made out of a hollowed gourd. The gourd (part a) is decorated with elaborate carvings of harvest scenes, musicians playing outside a building, fruit picking in an orchard, women talking. Two panels showing a stylized frog divide the scenes. The base of the gourd is decorated with carved geometric designs. The lid (part b) is cut out of the gourd and is convex, bulging in the centre where a stem would be. It is decorated as a stylized flower.

Small container with lid, made out of a hollowed gourd. The gourd (part a) is decorated with elaborate carvings of musicians and dancing, and travellers with donkies. Trees, birds, flowers and huts appear in the background. Six small panels, three on each side, show small animal creatures with arms out-stretched. The base and lid of the gourd are decorated with matching carved geometric designs. The lid (part b) is cut out of the gourd and is convex, rounding toward the centre where a stem would be.

Small pyro engraved rattle gourd. Standing frontal figure holding gourd rattle in right hand, another suspended from elbow, left hand holds two darts. Double headed serpent suspended from elbow. Inverted head over the top with large round eyes, nose in relief and long serpent tongue flanked by bird and monkey figures. Hole in base surrounded by six small perforations. Incomplete; partially repaired.

Small, round yellow-orange gourd, with intricate black carvings covering most of the exterior surface. The carvings show important aspects of the area’s natural environment and culture. At top are motifs of father sun and mother moon, surrounded by stylized architecture and mountains, and dense jungle foliage with a snake, jungle cat and bird emerging. Below is a continuous scene of village life, with houses, people, animals and trees. The bottom of the gourd is mainly unmarked. Dried seeds inside the gourd serve as noise making elements.
