Cantonese Opera HatN1.770

The folded hat is purple and rectangular with a short pleated train. The hat has a centre panel which folds inwards once on both sides. From the top edge, down the centre panel is a blue and white band. At the bottom of the band are two blue interlocking circles on a white background. Underneath the circles is a green band with purple and pink flowers. The back of the hat has no designs. Inside of the hat there is ecru lining, stiffened with cardboard. Two ecru ties are attached.

Cantonese Opera HatN1.811

The folded opera hat or lotus seed guard's hat is black and rectangular with a rounded top piece, a back flap and embroidered motifs. The hat has a black centre panel which folds inwards on both sides. Embroidered on the centre panel are two pink peonies with green leaves and blue swirls. These designs are repeated on the inside of both side folds. The rounded top piece has pink and orange peonies with green leaves and swirls. Hanging down from the top piece on either side of the centre panel is a red streamer. On the back, the flap mimics the rounded top piece and extends down past the bottom of the folded centre panel, flaring out at the bottom. In the centre of the flap is a large pink and blue peony. Surrounding the flower is a circle of gold scroll designs and pink peonies with green leaves and blue swirls. On the inside of the hat is ecru lining, stiffened with cardboard. Two thick ecru ties are attached and tied together.

The rounded top piece has a large embroidered dragon motif in green, blue, white, silver and gold. Hanging down from the top piece on either side of the centre panel is a red streamer. On the back, the flap mimics the rounded top piece and extends down past the bottom of the folded centre panel, flaring out at the bottom. The large dragon motif is repeated on the top piece of the back flap. Beneath the dragon and in the centre of the flap is a large green symbol. Surrounding the symbol is a circle of blue peonies, yellow scroll designs and green leaves. On the inside of the hat is ecru lining, stiffened with cardboard. Two ecru ties are attached.

Woven, palm leaf hat in a conical shape with a leather brim, top and detailing. The brim is painted with a vertical stripe design in red, yellow and brown. The top is painted red and black with multiply thin brown leather strips hanging down from the tip. The body of the hat is detailed with dyed palm strips in purple, blue and black along with leather diamonds painted black and red with white outline. There is a thin brown leather strap that hangs down from the inner rim.

Woven palm fibre hat consisting of fibres woven through and laid flat around outside of hat; long stripes of palm sit on a horizontal diagonal and are secured by palm fibre strips laced across. Twine woven, with two solid ring bases around edge. The weaving comes to a point at the top which is wrapped with stripes of palm to for a cylindrical-like shape.
