Wind Musical Instrument2847/121

Clay ocarina, one end wide and with a centre cleft, narrowing toward a round stem and mouthpiece with a windway. At the midpoint of the body is a high protrusion with a hole bored through its centre, possibly for use as a necklace ring. Four pitch holes are bored into the hollow chamber of the body and sit to either side of the protrusion, with a larger rectangular hole (a windcutter) bored on the underside. Around the pitch holes the body is decorated with fine patterns of incised lines and dots.

Clay ocarina has a round, bulbous body with three conical legs, and a long mouthpiece with a windway and windcutter below. On the sides are two narrow, oblong outcroppings, and a knob of clay to the back. The area around the base of this knob has been gouged. The instrument is decorated on the top with a strip of incised lines in a triangular pattern.

Clay ocarina in the shape of an animal, possibly a jaguar. A thick tail contains a windway with a windcutter beneath, and widens into the body of an animal decorated with black spots standing on four legs. Holes are bored into the instrument’s hollow inner chamber from each side of the torso, the neck, and through the protruding ears. Two elongated holes are bored through the cheeks as well. A small perforation serves as a mouth.

Clay ocarina, circular with a rounded base. A thin coil of clay winds around the sides of the object to the top, where it makes an vertical and slightly pointed protrusion with a bored necklace hole and a small oblong hole (a windway) bored vertically. Below this is a large semi-circular opening (the windcutter) bored into the hollow centre of the instrument. There is a pitch hole to the side of the protrusion and one on the bottom. The ocarina is decorated with black and orange pigment.

Clay ocarina in a V shape, joined by a thin neck of clay at top. One side is topped by two small round protrusions, with two holes beneath bored into the hollow chamber of the instrument. Two more holes are bored at the bottom of the V, and a fifth at the top of the second arm. The ocarina is decorated with incised patterns of lines.

Small, clay ocarina in the shape of an animal. The body is globular, balancing on three conical legs. The head has a protruding snout and eye, with a windway that opens above a round windcutter in the centre of the animal’s chest. Behind the head is a necklace hole. A round knob of a tail is attached at the back of the body and two small pitch holes pierce low on the sides into the instrument’s hollow centre.
