Canoe Prow2546/1

Partly painted and partly burnt canoe prow fragment. Made up of two large pieces and one smaller, held together by nails. The outside of the prow is charred black at the burnt end, and is edged with thick vertical white bands toward the front, then a section of light brown wood with sporadic patches of black paint, and ends in a point that is painted pink. The inside is partly charred, and has irregular patches of light brown wood and flaking pink paint.

Canoe prow that tapers from the concave back to a rounded point at the front where it is carved into a crocodile-like head capped at the nose with a rounded point at the tip. Behind this is a carving of a head with notched rows along the forehead, large eyes and a recurved beak-like nose. The underside is carved with geometric and scale-like designs, and the surface is stained dark brown.

Triangular shaped wooden prow with a cylindrical shaped base that tapers to a point. The sides of the base are incised with a repeating stylized geometric design. Attached below is a framework of triangular shapes intermixed with fish and bird heads. White pigment outlines the shapes while orange pigment is added to the engravings. Five fibre tassels hang from the base.

Canoe prow with a large animal head with upward-sloping jaws or a beak at the front, an upper figure of a double-headed animal with a forward-facing face reminiscent of the larger animal's head, and a rearward-facing face with down-sloping jaws or a beak. Below this figure is a support with two incised and painted concentric circles. The geometric designs and facial features are emphasized with black, light pinkish-brown, and white pigment.

Carved wooden figure depicting a mythical sea wolf. The figure sits upon a small base. It has a wolf's head with prominent nostrils and bared teeth and small ears that extend backwards above the eyes. Below the head are two coils of a serpent's body. The serpent's body has incised cross-hatch designs and larger painted diamond markings. Black, red, and orange paint accentuate these designs.
