String Puppet2886/3

String puppet with a decorated yellow hat that has a high centre point and ear-area embellishments. The skin is painted white and the facial features, fingers and toes are painted on, as are some wrinkles on the neck. The puppet wears a long red tunic that opens at the front and is belted with a yellow paper belt. A matching yellow paper ornament hangs around the neck. Gold edging decorates the cuffs and front opening. Below the tunic is a pink sarong attached above the waist, also decorated with gold down the front. The puppet is controlled by strings attached to the upper back, sides of the head and hands. The arms are moveable at shoulders and elbow, and the legs at the hip and knee.

String Puppet2886/1

String puppet with a white wooden hat that has a high point at the back and a rounded black protuberance at the centre. The facial features, fingers and toes are painted on, as are some wrinkles on the neck. The puppet wears a long red tunic that opens at the front and is lined on the front edges with gold. Under this he wears a pink sarong attached above the waist, and decorated with gold on the front. The feet are bare, as are the hands. The puppet is controlled by strings attached to the upper back, sides of the head, and hands. The arms are moveable at shoulders and elbow, and the legs at the hip and knee.

Rod Puppet2872/14 a-c

Wayang golek rod puppet of the character Batara Wisnu. The head carries an elaborate headdress that incorporates images of the eagle deity Garuda on each side, covering a fringe of black hair. The face is painted white with carved features finely outlined in black. The mouth is red and smiling, surrounded by a curling moustache and small beard. The torso is covered by a black, sleeveless, beaded hanging below which is a sarong belted at the waist. The sarong hides a wooden stick that extends through the torso to control the movement of the head. The golden arms are moveable at shoulder and elbow by wooden sticks attached to each hand, and are decorated with red and gold bracelets.

Shadow Puppet2872/12

Two-dimensional shadow puppet. The human-like figure is identical on both sides. It has white skin painted with sparse black hairs, round red eyes, an open, bearded red and gold mouth, and bared gold teeth. The hair is black and curled, and contains a gold headdress. The figure wears a checked and decorated garment that sits at the hips and falls to the floor. His legs are bare, with small colourful serpents wound around the ankles. The arms are encircled by elaborate bracelets at wrists and above elbows, and each hand has fingers as well as a large red and pink claw. A long white tail, decorated with several bracelets begins at the puppet’s hip and winds up to the top of its head. The leather of the puppet is pierced decoratively, especially throughout the hair, to allow light to shine through. Horn handles hold the puppet at the middle and move its fully extendable arms.

Shadow Puppet2872/11

Antaboga kulit shadow puppet. The creature’s face is pink, with partially closed eyes, a long snout, and an open red mouth with many sharp teeth and a thin black forked tongue. A golden headdress is attached to his forehead and a gold and white necklace surrounds his neck. The body is long and curved, eel-like, with no appendages, and ends with a golden tip on the tail. The object is painted the same on both front and back. The puppet is held up by a thin unpainted wooden handle attached at the bottom.

Rod Puppet2872/29 a-d

Rod puppet (wayang golek) of a tiger, or harimau with a feline head and a tiger-human torso and arms. The wooden head (part a) has small pointed ears, behind which are golden decorations reaching to the neck. The eyes have red pupils, and the mouth is open, showing small pointed teeth and a pink tongue. Stiff plastic whiskers stick out of the snout. The head, torso and arms are painted with tiger stripes. The torso (part b) is bare, and at the back is a thick curved tail connected at waist and right shoulder. A sarong, belted at the waist, hides a wooden stick (part c) that extends up through the torso and into the puppet’s head to control its movement. The puppet’s wrists are adorned with red and blue bracelets and the arms are moveable at the shoulder by wooden sticks attached to each hand. The fingers of both hands are short, with painted claws on each tip. The stand (part d) is a square piece of painted wood.

Panakawan (clown) puppet named Gareng. The head (part a) has a large lump on the back of the neck, below a fringe of black hair and a bald scalp. Painted between the blue eyes are expression lines, above a large hooked nose. The mouth is open and smiling, revealing a single white tooth. The torso (part b) is clothed in village style dress, with a short sleeved plaid shirt and a long checked sarong. The sarong hides a removable wooden stick (part c) that extends through the torso to control the movement of the head and connects the figure to its wooden base (part d). The arms are moveable at the shoulder and elbow by wooden sticks attached to each black gloved hand.

Three dimensional puppet. The woman’s head (part a) has a green painted face, with eyes that gaze upwards under curved brows. The hair is pulled back from her face and decorated with a triangular, blue headdress and carved gold embellishments. A long sleeved tunic covers the torso (part b), beneath which is a long patterned skirt hiding a removable wooden stick (part c) which controls the movement of the head and connects the figure to its cork base (part d) which is painted black . The arms are moveable at shoulder and elbow by wooden sticks attached to each hand, which are painted gold.

The puppet wears a long red tunic with edges trimmed in gold, overtop of a pink sarong, also decorated with gold. The puppet is controlled by strings attached to the upper back, sides of the head and hands. The arms are moveable at shoulders and elbow, and the legs at the hip and knee. The head has become detached from the body and is only connected to the puppet by the strings.

The puppet wears a long red tunic that opens at the front and matching red pants. The cuffs of tunic and pants are edged in gold, as is the opening of the shirt. The puppet is controlled by strings attached to the upper back, sides of the head, thighs and hands. The arms are moveable at shoulders and elbow, and the legs at the hip and knee. A short stick is attached to the string of the left hand.
