Unfinished Shoes1440/3 a-b

Two black wool textile panels, with dense gold embroidery shaped to form the tops and sides of a pair of shoes or slippers. There is a large floral motif centred on the top or toe section of each shoe form, and the panels that comprise the sides of the shoes are decorated with leaf and vine motifs. The embroidery is edged with narrow metallic cording. The black background textile has been trimmed from the edges of one embroidered panel, while the other is uncut.

Pair of shoes with thick laminated leather soles that have metal eyelets on the sides and wooden (?) nails around the top edge, on the sides, on the bottom, and in the top centre. The top of the sole is also decorated with incised v-shaped designs at the heel and incised semicircles at the toe. The top of the shoe is formed by a skin thong with a heel strap.

Shoes984/8 a-b

Pair of rigid shoes with thick stiff soles of natural brown leather studded with iron hobnails at the heels and toes, and stitches along the edges. Parallel lines are scored along the length of the soles. Shoes have low sides, but are high at the back of the heels and have upturned toes. There is narrow white leather piping along the edges, and the white leather extended down inside the heel. The sides of the shoes are covered with pink silk, over which are applied pieces of light green silk at the toe and heel. Small fragments of dark pink decorative pieces remain at the toes and heels. There are narrow bands of darker green silk at the top and bottom of the sides, with a row of heavy white stitches along the lower band. The shoes are white inside, and the soles are lines with loose cotton batting.
