Buddhist Shrine3384/1

Small carved ivory shrine (zushi). Inside the small hinged doors sits a carved amitabha Buddha. The outer edges of the shrine are completely covered in carved designs; the exterior and the interior surfaces of the rectangular hinged doors are covered in carved Buddhist scenes. The background wall behind the seated three-dimensional Buddha, inside the shrine, also has a simpler carved design.

Shrine2878/40

A chariot platform on four wheels with a "temple" resting on it. Each wheel is attached with a single nail, and has a green “x” painted on it. The overall colour of the base is green and around the edges of the base there are red, white and yellow stripes. There is also a white design painted on top of the green base; short lines surround the temple portion and there is a flower burst at the front of the base. There is a figure in the temple with a face, arms and a short body. The face of the figure is black, the mouth is red, and the eyes have a circle of red and white with a black dot in the centre. The sides of the figure are white and on the figure’s forehead there is a bindi surrounded by 11 small white dots. The figure’s clothes are green, red and yellow and it has a white necklace around its neck. The temple is open on three sides, and has blue, green, red, white, yellow and black designs on the outside. The base and back wall of the temple where the figure is attached is purple and white.

Shrine made of copper, with repousse floral designs on front. Back inserted into front, held in place with hide strip threaded through two flattened loops on each side. Top shaped like rounded double arch. Glass insert in corresponding shape with ceramic image of human-like deity inside. Pieces of coloured cloth or paper below image.

Shrine1262/321 a-g

Red, yellow, and blue painted rectangular-shaped shrine with scalloped panel at the top, two scalloped panels on either side of two sculptural columns. Scalloped panels are painted and carved with floral designs. Part b is a large rectangular wooden plank decorated with blue and red paint. Parts c and g are long pieces, narrower in the middle. Part d is a long rectangular wood piece with nails. Part e and f are two wooden pegs.

Portable shrine (Stūpa) of gilded copper on platform. Copper plate set into bottom of base, onto which is incised a quatrefoil foliate design with the traditional double-Vajra symbol on the bottom and the Indian swastika symbol in the front-centre. Bulbous shape on top of base, with an opening in it extending into top of base, holding rolls of paper inside opening (a scripture/mantra roll). Rectangle, truncated cone and umbrella shape above.

A shrine with doors that open at the front (part a) to reveal a small base with three figures on it (part b) which fits inside the shrine. The shrine is painted with white petals on a black background at the bottom, a yellow and orange monkey within a black frame on each door, two white birds outlined with black on a white background with their necks around each other on the upper part, and a yellow cordate-shaped decoration with a flower in the centre at the top. The sides of the shrine have a diamond-shaped pattern outlined with yellow and having white dots in the centre of a green background. The three platforms separating each part are pink with white dots around the edges and yellow with black horizontal lines on the sides. The figures on a base within (part b) have a blue base. The figures are painted with red, black, and yellow faces on a white background. One figure has a blue-painted lower half body, another has a black one, and the other has a green one.

ShrineN2.838 a-b

Part a is a carved wooden Bodhisattva figure painted gold which appears to have been glued onto a stand from a large shrine (N2.987 h) and no longer fits in its original box-like shrine. Part b is the small box-like shrine with doors on metal hinges that open outward to reveal gold-walled interior with a wooden platform at the bottom, only partially decorated at the front. At the top is a carved facade painted with a curvilinear flower pattern with one red, white and light blue flower. The outside of the box is painted brown in a wood-like pattern with red calligraphy running vertically on both doors. The right door has carved metalwork all along its edge and a carved metal handle. The edges of the box are rounded.

Kavad Shrine2587/2 a-k

A miniature mobile temple with several doors, each painted with various folk deities and text, appearing to tell a story. The last door concludes the narration, opening with a darshan of Ram, Lakshman and Sita, standing in the innermost chamber of the temple. The sides and ends of the shrine are decorated with floral, ray and cross-hatching motifs. There is a small drawer under the doors and a compartment in back for worshippers to deposit coins (see Cultural Context field). A leather strap is attached to the top. There is a shrine (part a), a sliding panel (part b), and doors (parts c-k).
