Round mortar with an approx. 2-inch deep depression. Weathering and abrasion along one side.

Circular in shape. Signs of buring and ash apparent in base of depression. Newspaper is attached to side and rim. Red paint marks on side.

Object has a deep square bowl. Surface is reddish. Chips in rim show black underneath. While cataloging on 11/5/2002, found this object with the catalog number and label 1966-86/984. 1966-86/984 is Id'd as HR in catalog with no related objects, indicating this mortar was mislabeled. Siri Angeles and Kathleen Pyfer changed the catalog number to Cat.#1966-86/1018 (number created by Burke staff) as 1966-86/1017 was the last catalog number at that time. No information exists to link this mortar with 1966-86/984. SWD 11/19/02 Found piece of paper inside mortar saying: Butler:"Hauled out by bulldozer in Wakemap Mound in 1955, Butler"

Broken, very flat bottom with reddish brown streaking on grinding side; C.Hehman

Triangular stone, 1-2 cm. depression from grinding

Stone is darker grey in center depression. Artifact has 1-2 cm depression in center. Flaked on edge and dorsal.

Mortar with a piece missing from one side. Exterior and interior surface is ground. (G. Rappaport, 03/06/2002).

Vesicular basalt mortar, Bergen notes "Large desert type basalt morter with one side broken, found part way down a ridge some twenty-five yards below a camp that was blowing out. It appears as if it had washed out with some heavy rain and then rolled part way down the ridge and then been recovered by succeeding washes. Only a small corner was exposed." SWD, 12/5/2002

According to Bergen's site notes, "White stone mortar -- 8-1/2 x 7-1/2 x 4 -- grooves alongside." Zig-zag pattern grooved along circumference of exterior surface. SWD, 12/5/2002
