Tapa Cloth2906/1

Large rectangular tapa cloth. The base colour of the cloth is stained a medium brown, with unpainted strips of light brown on either end. The cloth is painted with a dark brown, possibly oil based, pigment in squares with repeating patterns of birds, animals, outdoors scenes with a house, tree, sun, moon and star, a Tongan shield motif, and a central panel with triangles, lines, and lettering. At each end is a light brown strip with a bird and number in each square; 18 to 21 at one end, 19 to 22 at the other end.

Small rectangle of tapa cloth with smaller rectangular design on one side painted brown, pale red, and black. Central floral motif with four large brown petals and four smaller black ones is set within a large diamond, with identical opposing sides, which is itself set within a circle filled with short black horizontal lines. On either side, a half circle filled with similar motifs is separated two vertical brown leaves.

Small rectangle of tapa cloth with smaller rectangular design on one side painted brown, pale red, and black. Two large floral motifs with four black petals and four brown leaves, set within circles of concentric brown rings, are separated by two large oblong petals with teeth-like design; half of a similar design are at either end.

Large tapa cloth dyed brown in patches with black painted decoration. The numbers 46 through 50 are evenly spaced down each side and two vertical bands of printed letters are in the middle. Bands of elongated diamond shapes filled with a leaf design separate areas of floating triangular and vegetal designs.

The cloth is rectangular and natural coloured with patterns painted in brown and black. The patterns are arranged in horizontal bands. The bands on the top and bottom edges are repeated brown lines. The next band is made of black squares with two natural coloured flowers in the centre and el borate diamond and triangle borders. The next band has a black background with repeated natural coloured, three-prong figures. Another band has a black background with a natural coloured chain pattern. The final band has natural coloured parallelograms with a central flower and scored edges on a brown background. The cloth is made of two pieces joined together.

The cloth is square and natural in colour with a triangle fringe. There is a double diagonal line extending from each corner and ending in a small centre diamond surrounded by four small diamonds in the centre of the cloth. Along one edge there are four 'v's with a dot in the centre. Along another edge there is '22' and 's oooi'. The triangle fringe covers all four sides with the triangles from two of the sides painted brown.

The cloth is rectangular and natural in colour with designs painted in black and dark red. There is a narrow border along the edges decorated only with bunches of four red lines. Inside the borders are four horizontal panels. The first panel is wide and has large natural coloured flowers repeated on a red background. The next panel is thin and has natural coloured diamonds on a black background. The next panel is thin and has natural coloured, elongated X’s separated by double lines on a black background. The final panel is wide and has red sunburst designs bordered by triple rows of triangles on a natural coloured background. The cloth is made of two narrow pieces of cloth joined together in the centre.

The cloth is square and natural in colour with designs painted in brown. There is a border of squares set in from the edge. Opposite sides of the border have the same design within the squares; one is diamonds and the other is triangles. In the centre there are five panels; three horizontal flanked by a vertical panel on either side. The motif of four small squares arranged in a square with a heart turned outwards in each corner is repeated three times in each vertical panel. The upper and lower horizontal panels each repeat the motif twice. The centre panel has two triangles with lines extending down 2from the base. All designs are painted brown and outlined in a black-brown.
