Gambling Game BoardA17073 a-b

Wooden plaque and counter stick stained reddish brown. The plaque (part a) has a straight edge and curved sides which give it a half-circle shape. On the surface is carved a zoomorphic face (bear) with widely spaced eyes and a wide mouth with teeth. Several vertical lines extend from the top of the piece to the top of the mouth. The carving is two dimensional. The stick (part b) tapers to a point, and has two engraved lines at the wider end. The plaque has two drilled holes with braided twine running through.

Gambling Game PiecesA17075 a-d

Whale bone game pieces (parts a-d). The two "female" bones (a, d) have black lines about half an inch from each end painted on narrow bands of white paint. The "male" bones (b-c) have black lines half an inch from each end plus two red lines in the centre about half an inch apart. These painted bands are also applied to wider bands in white paint. The game pieces are cylindrical with flat ends, and are yellow-white in colour.

A well shaped smooth grey stone with a long thin shape that is triangular in cross section. Has notch for securing to handle. One side is consistently flat, except for a horizontal bump. Two other sides are rounded side-by-side mirror images of each other with a tapered concavely curving triangular section at an angle in between them to one end, creating a straightened edge.

One side is consistently flat, except for a horizontal bump. Two other sides are rounded side-by-side mirror images of each other with a tapered flat triangular section at an angle in between them to one end, creating a rounded edge.

Cedar root basket consisting of interlocking coiled work (bifurcated stitches); parallel slat base construction with wide slat foot. There is a braided coiled border; coiled openwork. Partial imbrication; continuous vertical zigzag designs. Alternation of vertical stripe bands with vertical zigzag bands. The first is in bullrush with red cherry or in bullrush with black and red. Zig-zag bands are tri-colour.

Rectangular, footed basket with slightly flaring sides and a flap-style lid secured with three ties. Simple interlocking coiled work (bifurcated stitches); back of basket is extended and folded to form a flap lid (parallel coils with edge of two coiled rows around it); foot of three coiled rows; twine ties. Total imbrication: series of vertical bands in black/red/bulrush repeating diagonal pattern, all against ground of bulrush. Pattern on lid is extension of pattern on back. Edge imbricated in bulrush; small patterns in red and in black. Colour: tan.
